Does the strong wind frighten you?

I'm worried the big oak might crash down into the garden, or the roof might rip off. Doesn't help that I sleep in the loft extension, it sounds more dramatic up here. It's going to be a long night Sad

It doesn't scare me but the noise keeps me awake if it's really gusty. Sometimes I take a blanket downstairs and sleep on the sofa where it's not so loud.

fastwigglylines · 26/12/2020 23:36

@Inextremis

I'm another one who loves it - it's exhilarating! Nothing better than lying in a warm cosy bed and listening to the wind howling outside.
Yes, this! I love hearing the wind.
printedlace · 26/12/2020 23:36

Problem we have, is that we both can't sleep without the windows open in our room.. but the bedroom door rattles in the wind! 🤣☹️

SRS29 · 26/12/2020 23:42

Yep, on the South coast, house literally on the beach, bedroom top (3rd floor) proper windy slightly scary, Bella proper going for it Sad

Oodlesofnoodles20 · 26/12/2020 23:42

I love it!

Neighneigh · 26/12/2020 23:47

We have old rattly windows and they're stuffed with folded up cardboard but I am still convinced they're going to blow in tonight!

Mind you it is better than our camping trip in july, 50mph gusts in a tent in the Lakes. You could hear it boom and roar down the valley and hit the tent like nothing I've ever experienced. Me and DH got about half an hour's sleep, the kids slept through!

BathroomWork · 26/12/2020 23:48

Yes because I have memories of lying awake as a child, waiting for the silver birch trees to come crashing down on the roof.

They never did and I don't live there now, so it was pointless losing all that sleep. But I still don't like the sound of wind at night. Daytime doesn't seem so bad, somehow.

Gertie75 · 26/12/2020 23:52

I always feel sorry for the animals out in it but I do hope that the neighbours Leylandii trees blow over.

RoseMartha · 26/12/2020 23:52

Yes i hate it. But once it took me off my feet and blew me down the road. Reading it back sounds ridiculous but I ended up grazed, bruised and very shocked.

PoppyOppy · 26/12/2020 23:57

The wind is strong tonight, lovely to be tucked up in bed.

Feel sorry for the escapee from the HMP North Sea Camp if he's out in this. Yes, he's absconded from an open prison but tonight's weather is shit to be on the run.

We've had police cars and helicopters out here looking for him.

SoddingWeddings · 26/12/2020 23:57

No, I love a good storm. Growing up in Cornwall has given me a healthy respect for weather, but it doesn't frighten me.

I'll admit to being a touch twitchy just around the eye of Hurricane Irma (we were on Antigua) but we were fine, and we had an evacuation plan. The joys of being an ex copper married to a Navy man - you don't get much time to focus on your fears if you're confronting things head on, and I think I take this focus in to other aspects of my life. Although, I go into a blind panic when I'm dealing with dental pain or the dentist...

Bargebill19 · 26/12/2020 23:57

I find it very unsettling and slightly terrifying if it gets bad. Discovered tonight a window leaks. 😱

RHTawneyonabus · 26/12/2020 23:59

First storm in new house there are some big trees around but think it will be okay

Growing up we were the first house in the valley and the wind roared down the hill and chucked everything at the side of the house. My parents had loft conversion/ flat roof dormer thing put on and storm ripped the entire thing off blew it over the house and chucked it on the road at the front of the house.

JustPickleRick · 27/12/2020 00:00

@printedlace

Fold a sock over and put it in the door just as you close it. Stops the rattle :)

TheoriginalLEM · 27/12/2020 00:03

I find it very eerie, yet comforting.

Last year we were camping in 50mph winds. It felt like the devil was smashing the tent down. We went home the next day!!

MintyMabel · 27/12/2020 00:06

No, I love it.

notangelinajolie · 27/12/2020 00:07

I love big storms. We've been on a few cruises and I love the big storms at sea too - especially the bay lof Biscay ones at night which always seem twice as bad. There is something very powerful about nature doing its worst and it mesmerises me.

I went to bed early tonight so I could listen to it.

AlwaysLatte · 27/12/2020 00:09

It's windy here now, too. I always worry about the massive oak in the front garden coming down on the house! 😩

PaddingtonsHat · 27/12/2020 00:11

Not normally, but tonight I’m worried about the trampoline taking flight. No sleep for me

colouringindoors · 27/12/2020 00:13

Really windy here now, which wouldn't normally bother me, but on top of everything else it's making me feel on edge.

ladybird69 · 27/12/2020 00:16

It’s the only type of weather that frightens me. During a storm 10 or so years ago I was washing up minding my own business, staring out of the window and I saw the wind flip the roof of our summer house right off. It was a proper wooden house that cost thousands, not flimsy in the least and weighed tons. Yet to see the roof just lift straight off totally scared me shitless. Wind has my total respect.

Defenbaker · 27/12/2020 00:20

Yes, it does, because the neighbours have a very large tree which could do a lot of damage if it falls our way. It often sheds dead wood during storms, and is in dire need of trimming, but they are too selfish to do anything about it and refuse to let anyone else organise a tree surgeon (people have offered to pay, but the conversation is shut down). I'd have no sympathy if it falls on their property, but feel it's more likely to fall our way.

I don't mind a bit of wind and rain, but when a storm is raging I get tree anxiety.

TwnklTwnklLittleStarfighter · 27/12/2020 00:22

I live storms. I figure the house has been fine for 300 years, so the odds are on our side (but I’ve probably jinxed it now!)

SenorFrog · 27/12/2020 01:19

I'm a storm lover too. I love watching them. I've been 'lucky' to have lived through a few hurricane watches and a full blown hurricane. Very exciting but then I wasn't a home owner so I just enjoyed without the thought of damage.
