Where should I get a king-size mattress from?

Our mattress now has springs poking out and even though it served is well for 17 years, we need to buy a new one.
I'm hoping I can get a good deal in the sales. We like medium/ firm and I'm happy to explore all options (memory foam, springs etc). I'd love your recommendations.

We stayed in a hotel recently and the bed was honestly so comfortable I asked them what make it was so I could buy my own. It was a Sleepeezee.
As soon as we move house next year I will be buying one

JonHammIsMyJamm · 26/12/2020 21:08

Mine is a Hypnos, a fully sprung traditional style one. I got it from a local bed shop. I bought 2 ( a double for DD’s bed and an SK for mine), DD’s is the retail version of the Premier Inn mattress, mine is a higher end one. Both are excellent

ChequerBoard · 26/12/2020 21:10

What's your budget? If money is no object then Vi-Spring all the way. We managed to get a Vi-Spring in the And So To Bed sale at a huge discount and have never regretted it. Amazingly comfortable and supportive.

At a cheaper price point, I have just bought the DC new mattresses direct from the Emma website and am impressed at the comfort and quality for the price.

We have an Emma mattress which is very comfortable.

Wornout12108 · 26/12/2020 21:21

Hypnos, we have a beautiful bed from them, you do need to turn the mattress regularly in the first year but it's brilliant I miss it when I'm away for the night sleeping elsewhere.

DominaShantotto · 26/12/2020 21:24

Avoid Bensons - shitty quality, worse customer service, guarantee worthless and likely to sink like a stone.

Ours now is an Otty and it's really nice.

Sexnotgender · 26/12/2020 21:26

Surprisingly my mattress is from IKEA and is incredibly comfortable. It was about £600 from memory.

Savoretti · 26/12/2020 21:28

Be careful of the Emma, Otty mattress in a box types that have lots of foam if you are warm in bed. They are so hot. I got one and can’t even manage in winter, summer would be dreadful. I am going back to springs for sure

SuperPug · 26/12/2020 21:29

Sleepeezee is great.
We bought a Vispring with the matching divan and it is amazing. Big big step up from a smallish Cotswold (?) mattress.

JingleJohnsJulie · 26/12/2020 21:31

The last mattress we bought was from Argos. It was here within 3 hours and DS is really happy with it.

MyNameHasBeenTaken · 26/12/2020 21:32

Sexnot
I have a similar one.
IKEA. I think £635 , a couple of years ago.
A mattress has always been a functional thing. But I love this one!

InterfectoremVulpes · 26/12/2020 21:37

Our ikea one is really comfy too. Hovag i think it is.

Hellofayearsofar · 26/12/2020 21:37

Our budget is up to around £1000. I want to get something that will last. I'm in Tier 4 so we can't visit any bed shops. Is there usually a guarantee on the mattress in case you don't get on with it?

I’d avoid the new wave of foam ‘mattress in a box’ brands; Emma, Otty, Simba, etc. Very cheap construction and hot to sleep on. I don’t like the more expensive memory foam mattresses (Tempur types) because they are so hot.

I’m definitely a traditional pocket spring person. Go for the best quality you can buy. Plenty of springs and lots of natural materials. John Lewis mattresses are good too, I’m sure I read somewhere that some of their ranges are made by the vi-spring people (or in the same factory). Natural wool, cotton jacquard covers, non sweaty, skin friendly materials.

Pretty sure that’s the one we’ve got.
bilbodog · 26/12/2020 22:38

Try the wool room - you might get one less than £1000 in the sale if they have one.

Superstardjs · 26/12/2020 22:40

I've got an Emma and I would not recommend it. The warmth bit is not major issue for me but it is freakishly heavy and very uncomfortable.

Giraffey1 · 26/12/2020 22:43

Watching with interest. I so need a new mattress!

Wbeezer · 26/12/2020 22:48

I think mine is an IKEA Hovag too, it wasnt one if the cheapest Ikea ones.
Don't do what i did and try out the really expensive ones in John Lewis for fun all others will seem inferior and a £10, 000 matress will be top of your lottery win shopping list.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 26/12/2020 22:49

We had very good service from Bensons and the manager was helpful and explained about the different options. We chose a super king Tempur mattress, because the new generation ones don’t make you hot and it’s very comfortable. It was expensive though.

PreRaphaeliteMotherhood · 26/12/2020 22:49

Also watching with interest. I was pretty much sold on an Emma or similar but now people have said that they are really hot I’m worried as I’m a massive overheater! Our budget is only £500 at absolute top end though.

Onedropbeat · 26/12/2020 22:50

Currently have Hypnos from their factory outlet which I love

Have also bought from the matress man who are very cheap and very good for sleepezee ones

I would never get a roll up mattress

21833efb · 26/12/2020 22:51

Millbrook Beds - I have one of their Majestic 3000 king size mattresses and it's very good quality and well made. Quite firm but that's my preference. Purchased from an independent furniture store.

It's about 5 years old now and still almost as good as new with turning over/topping and turning a few times a year.

Worth looking into whether whoever you buy from will also collect, dispose and recycle your current mattress.

Avoid Dreams - terrible customer service.

Indecisivelurcher · 26/12/2020 22:52

Following! We are tier 3, hoping we can bounce in a few in a shop. Think we've got bensons and dreams locally.

MrsPatrickDempsey · 26/12/2020 22:54

We ordered an Emma before Christmas. It is very firm and unyielding. I found it ok for comfort but ours was faulty as it never completely 'inflated' and sloped at the sides.
Replaced with a tempur which is lovely.
