Where should I get a king-size mattress from?

Hellofayearsofar · 26/12/2020 21:01

Our mattress now has springs poking out and even though it served is well for 17 years, we need to buy a new one.
I'm hoping I can get a good deal in the sales. We like medium/ firm and I'm happy to explore all options (memory foam, springs etc). I'd love your recommendations.

I also have a MIllbrook - it's actually about 16 years old but still fabulous. It was £800 in the sale (half price), and I would definitely have another.

It's a king size with god knows how many pocket springs...

MidnightHangingTree · 26/12/2020 23:11

We got a Doze Luxe mattress from Dreams, it's got pocket springs and memory foam. It's really comfy and was only £299 for a double.

We have an Emma and it’s ok, I’m not entirely convinced but it’s hard for me to judge because I’m pregnant and am always horrendously uncomfortable at night when pregnant regardless of what I’m sleeping on. My DH likes it. We are also tier 4 and the appeal of the Emma and similar brands that come in a box is that they tend to have a 100/200 night return policy or similar where you can try it for several months even and if you don’t like it you can send it back for a full refund. Plus they arrive really quickly whereas a lot of mattresses are 12 weeks lead time.

M&S look like they have a good selection but we are tier 4 and can’t see that changing for a long time so it’s a bit of a gamble buying untested

ethelredonagoodday · 30/12/2020 20:44

Just jumping on this, are the emmas and similar which are hybrid of foam and springs equally bad? DH and I were looking at Emmas and Eves etc, but the comments above re warmth have put me off a bit.

Unremarkable · 30/12/2020 20:51

Have a look on the Which? Website. You have to subscribe to find the Best Buys but the advice guides are free and can help you decide what type of mattress (sprung, memory foam etc) would suit you.

Haggisfish · 30/12/2020 20:54

IKEA have a 100 day return policy on their mattresses. I’d avoid foam too-too hot and dip after long term use ime.

RandomUsernameHere · 30/12/2020 20:56

Ikea. Ours is from there and about 10 years old and still really comfortable.

FindHungrySamurai · 30/12/2020 21:00

DS’s IKEA mattress is still pretty comfortable after 18 years.

Itsamess8456 · 30/12/2020 21:00

We have been renovating so went to IKEA just before we entered tier 4 to buy a mattress - but they had none left!

We ended up buying this one from Amazon..

It was a bit of a risk as we hadn't tried it before buying but my goodness - it's amazing! Even the children sigh with the comfortable"ness" if it when they jump into our bed.

ThreeLadsPointingAtAStar · 30/12/2020 21:27

We have a King Size Sleepeezee Wool Supreme Pocket Mattress - it cost just over £500 earlier this year.

It's lovely, warm, but not uncomfortably hot.

PaperMonster · 30/12/2020 21:32

I’ve been to a local small shop today and ordered one. Can’t even remember the brand, but I did manage to lie on them all and choose the comfiest! And in the sale too!!

TenaciousP · 30/12/2020 21:34

Harrison Spinks. Natural materials. V comfy.

Haggisfish · 30/12/2020 23:29

@Itsamess8456 ooooooohhhh I’m tempted!!

NewYearsPeeve · 30/12/2020 23:38

Millbrook Beds are the best IMO. British made.

cheeseismydownfall · 30/12/2020 23:49

We've got an IKEA Hovag with a thin memory foam topper which is the perfect combination of firm and supportive (from the mattress) but yielding (from the topper). Absolutely love it.

We bought a Vi Spring divan once which cost ££¥ and honestly it was the worst sleep I have ever had. Massive, massive disappointment and the most money I have ever wasted on something. Ended up flogging it on eBay.

Voyager54 · 31/12/2020 07:08

Hi Op Would recommend Hypnos posture support silk. We have had ours 3 years and this is best bed. We were also recommended to purchase a new base as this can affect the performance of the mattress glad we did as this gave us extra storage 4 large drawers!

Skysblue · 31/12/2020 22:51

I got my Mattress from a major Online company and it arrived reeking of cigarette smoke. Have tried everything but a yr later can still faintly smell it 🤢 They never replied to any of my messages / bad reviews.

Be very careful who you choose to buy from and check reviews first! Ours cost £800 😭

wewillmeetagain · 31/12/2020 22:56

I've got a simba and it is honestly the most comfortable mattress I've ever slept on. However it does get hot in warm weather.

SusieSusieSoo · 31/12/2020 23:30

Chiropractor recommended pocket sprung with memory foam topper. Mine came from Dreams it's 9/10 years old now & still an absolute dream to sleep on every night. Was £650 ish. Did start off by trying a £2500 one in the shop but told the salesman that was out of my budget when he told me the price!! It was fab but mine is lovely

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 31/12/2020 23:34

Ours is from John Lewis and I love it.

Can't remember the name of it, though?

DonttouchthatLarry · 31/12/2020 23:36

John Ryan after reading loads of good reviews on here.

minipie · 31/12/2020 23:38

John Ryan, if you want proper pocket sprung not foam.

They give really good advice on which of their mattresses will suit you (in a range of budgets) and as long as you go with one of their recommendations they have a 60 day try and return policy.

basilsmom · 31/12/2020 23:48

We brought a simba in the summer and I love it

Gertie75 · 31/12/2020 23:52

We've got a Simba and it's so comfortable, dd's got an Emma mattress which is comfortable too but firmer and noticeably hotter.
