My GHDs, purchased in 2007, have just died

You have been with me through the 2008 dramatic side fringe, the 2011 Frankie-from-the-Saturdays asymmetric bob, the 2013 wedding day extensions, the 2014 ‘beach waves’ that dropped out in 5 seconds and the ill-advised 2017 fringe which never looked right the second I left the salon.

Goodbye sweet Prince

Sorry for your loss. I know it might be a bit raw but have you thought about replacing them yet?

DreadingSeason2020sFinale · 24/12/2020 11:26

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's heartbreaking.

I had a much loved set and mum's friend asked to borrow them to take on holiday as her wide ones were too wide. (She left me with hers which were, quite frankly, gross. Full of skin or grease or hair product down the edges. They came back from holiday and swapped back and the next time I tried to use mine a couple of weeks later, they were dead. Murdered by a family friend. And when we told her? Nothing but an "Oh well they worked fine for me! That's a shame, love"

sunnysidegold · 24/12/2020 11:27

I fear mine are terminally ill. They became mine Christmas 2008 and have lasted me well. Poker straight hair was all I could ever manage.

Now they don't feel so hot and I fear they will go to that big hair appliance drawer in the sky.

My 2006 pair, which I got for my 21st birthday, died last year.

It was a sad day however I was excited about getting a brand shiny new pair Grin

CheesePuns · 24/12/2020 11:43

Thank you all for your kind words during this difficult time

@DreadingSeason2020sFinale that’s terrible! She should have replaced them Angry

I have tentatively begun looking at replacements - there’s nothing quite like them for my fine flyaway hair, they give it some shape and definition at the ends instead of it looking fluffy. They’re ace for a bendy wave too, although I’m not great at that. Weirdly I remember sitting on my bed in my student house ordering this pair, they must have been used thousands of times!

ViceVersa · 24/12/2020 11:45

Oh no don’t say that mine are from 2007 and somehow still going strong 🤞 I’d be lost without them but fear they may be geriatric by now Sad

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 24/12/2020 11:47

New GHDs are nothing on the old style, they don't seem to get anywhere near as hot. My pink GHD from 2006 were repaired twice before I gave up and moved on.

ViceVersa · 24/12/2020 11:48

I should add they were bought out of a £5,000 inheritance I got and are literally the only thing I have to show for it Hmm so they have to last another 10 years at least!

Seabrookscheeseandonion · 24/12/2020 11:49

Definitely try getting them repaired - the new ones are not as good!

InglouriousBasterd · 24/12/2020 11:50

I’m close to the same horror. My brother got me my beloved straighteners before I went travelling in 2005 - they’re starting to look a little sad. They’ve been through a lot.

whinetime89 · 24/12/2020 11:52

Sorry for your loss.
I highly recommend the Cloud 9 - amazing

kursaalflyer · 24/12/2020 11:53

I still have my wide ones from the year dot. They have died twice but I have had them repaired for £20 each time. Can't remember the name of the place but sent them off completely dead and within a week they were back ready for the next few years. Couldn't live without them.

PowerhouseOfTheCell · 24/12/2020 11:55

RIP OP they lived their life like a candle in the wind Sad

I have a lovely burn scar on my wrist to remind me of my original GHDs that I dropped on said wrist in year 10,

formerbabe · 24/12/2020 11:56

When mine died, I replaced them with Kipozi wide plate ones...about £25 including delivery. They are amazing...in fact I think I prefer them

spotlovesbedtime · 24/12/2020 12:13

In the past I have sent my GHD's when broken. to GHD and they have fixed them free of charge......worth a try?

JacobReesMogadishu · 24/12/2020 12:18

Get Cloud nines to replace. I have fairly new GHds and also Cloud nines and much prefer the latter.

Littlefluffyclouds13 · 24/12/2020 12:21

Don't replace with new ghds, the old ones are the best!
Get yourself on eBay and get them repaired, there are tons of people who can do it. I sent mine recorded delivery and had them back within days. If they are beyond repair the seller will buy them for spares.
Just go for a seller who has tons of good reviews!

ememem84 · 24/12/2020 12:25

Mine are also from 2007. I fear they may be on their way out. But don’t dare say it out loud just in case they hear me.

DontWalkPastTheCastle · 24/12/2020 12:27

My GHD's were poorly from the start and lasted less than a year.

However I discovered straighteners can be just as good for less than half the price, and resolved never to be thusly ripped off again.

CheesePuns · 24/12/2020 12:36

I hadn’t even thought to try sending them for repair Blush I’ll look into that.

My first pair of straighteners were some Braun ones in about 1998, they had a gas canister you had to buy to power them. They always smelt quite chemically and never did much to actually straighten my hair, just pulled it a lot - the GHDs were a revelation!

ButNotTonight20 · 24/12/2020 12:37

Mine are from 2002 and still going strong. I love the now retro looking styles depicted on the leaflet in the box 🤣

JanewaysBun · 24/12/2020 12:39

Oh god i remember the gas canister ones... how was that safe??

Mine are still alive, born 2005 although barely loved anymore

JonHammIsMyJamm · 24/12/2020 12:39

I have the cloud nine straighteners. I don’t use them often but they are v good.

CheesePuns · 24/12/2020 12:47

Wow, they must be a rarity! I can imagine the styles, I bet they’re very early Girls Aloud-esque Grin

Laufeythejust · 24/12/2020 12:53

I remember the gas canister ones too!

I love the feeling of new straighteners though- they always seem more slippery when you first get them. Good timing though I’m sure you will get a good deal in the sale, I got my mum a pair of GHDs in the amazon Black Friday sale for £70.
