My GHDs, purchased in 2007, have just died

You have been with me through the 2008 dramatic side fringe, the 2011 Frankie-from-the-Saturdays asymmetric bob, the 2013 wedding day extensions, the 2014 ‘beach waves’ that dropped out in 5 seconds and the ill-advised 2017 fringe which never looked right the second I left the salon.

Goodbye sweet Prince

Mine are upstairs now. Been with me since 2007 too. I have to kind of jiggle them to make the light come on and sometimes they switch off halfway through, so I have heavily hinted at my OH about new ones for Christmas.

Feel a bit guilty that I am replacing them before they have actually died. But this way they can retire in peace, next to my 15 yr old Dyson who is also in my bedroom, having retired a few years ago..

Can't believe so many others still have their old ghds!!
I got mine Christmas 2007 so that makes them 13 tomorrow and still going strong!
They've seen me through 12 different houses, 4 countries, 6 cities. Gone from schoolgirl to student to worker to a mummy any day now. Probably been used nearly everyday of their 13 years. 💙

Mine are also a mid-00s throwback. I haven't used them much since uni, where the superstraight and shiny hair trend was at its peak. The neck burns were painful but your hair looked great.

I had forgotten all about those gas canister stylers. I think I even took mine on the plane with me in the wild days before 9/11 when airport security was virtually non-existent.

Touch wood mine are still going. Pre 2000, as I graduated in 1999 and definitely had them at uni.

Don’t use them these days, but my 15 year old has recently unearthed them so they are back in use :)

@DreadingSeason2020sFinale. I also had a housemate that borrowed mine one day, after her cheap ones broke discovered how amazing they were. They disappeared into her room for months to be used daily, and as she was moving out i had a sneaking suspicion they’d go with “by accident”.

I went into her room one day and removed the fuse. She gave them back the next day saying they were “broken”. Not a hint of remorse or offer to replace.

Mine that I got for Christmas in 2006 died in the first week of lockdown. I bought a cheap babyliss pair to tide me over until the new year but it’s just not the same....

That’s exactly it, minus the schoolgirl bit! They’ve sizzled away in so many different houses and on so many different hairstyles. As of today, less of a sizzle and more of a tepid heat.

Thoughts and prayers to all who’ve lost loved GHDs in this, the most miserable of years Flowers

I'm sorry for your loss. Mine have been with me since 2010, hoping I can get a couple more years from them.

When I saw this thread, I thought of German Hound Dogs, not curling tongs.

HopeYourHighHorseBucks · 24/12/2020 15:48

This hurts my heart. Just before christmas aswell? Awful.

I replaced my first original love GHDs with a shiny new pair, I know she would be ok with that, she didn't spend all those years giving me dead straight hair, for me to give up now.

Lollyneenah · 24/12/2020 16:01

Ah bless you OP. My 2005s are still with me, the only possession I've kept that long. My sincerest condolences

Twinkie01 · 24/12/2020 16:20

Can I join, I've recently retired mine (2007) after insisting to DH that I need the new Dyson ones, they didn't need retiring, they're lighter, easier to use and so superior, I'm too proud to get them down from the shelf where they mock me whilst I wrangle with these ridiculous, heavy, zany coloured, monstrosities.

I'm going to go to confession this evening.

NoisyBrain · 24/12/2020 16:31

My original GHDs lasted over 10 years and when they died I replaced them with identical ones because they are so amazing.

My DPs bought me the originals for my first Christmas in my new house alone post-divorce. I still chuckle when I recall DM saying "Wouldn't you like something nice for the house?" and my reply being "No thank you, I'd like nice straight hair" Smile

BitOfFun · 24/12/2020 17:30

I've had mine since about 2003? I've replaced the cord on them at the grand cost of £7.99, and they are still giving me great service. Come to think of it, as I'm pretty seriously unwell, they will almost certainly outlive me!

AJTracey · 24/12/2020 17:32

Thinking of you OP Flowers

dontputitinyourmouth · 24/12/2020 18:55

I too purchased my beloved GHDs with a student loan instalment circa 2005, I will be properly devastated when they make their way to the great salon in the sky. The wiring is slightly dodgy but if you get the right angle once you fiddle with the cord they work perfectly. Need to look into repairs.......Grin

ArialAnna · 24/12/2020 19:22

Ah right, if the light is coming on then it won't be the fuse (nothing would work). Shame as that's an easy fix you can do yourself. Hope it gets sorted OP!

LER83 · 24/12/2020 19:44

My 2006 ones are hanging on, although not sure for how much longer. My 2004 ones died a few years ago, although that was my fault as I managed to crack them ☹

KnitFastDieWarm · 24/12/2020 19:56

I love how many of us bought them using our student loans (hey, fellow thirtysomethings). At the time they were by far the most expensive thing i’d ever bought in a single transaction and i still remember the sense of gay abandon and wild daring that 19 year old me felt as I ordered them off the website Grin

I went into a salon to get them and it felt amazing, I was the same, the most expensive item I’d ever bought! I had to hide them from my mum and when she eventually saw them I tried to convince her that I’d got them in the sale for about £70Blush when my sister wanted some a couple of years later that was absolutely fine thoughHmm......me, bitter, never.........
