My GHDs, purchased in 2007, have just died

You have been with me through the 2008 dramatic side fringe, the 2011 Frankie-from-the-Saturdays asymmetric bob, the 2013 wedding day extensions, the 2014 ‘beach waves’ that dropped out in 5 seconds and the ill-advised 2017 fringe which never looked right the second I left the salon.

Goodbye sweet Prince

I misread and got halfway through the third post before realising this wasn't about German Shepherd Dogs.

It was Full of skin or grease or hair product down the edges that clarified it for me, but initially I was thinking, eurgh.

IRememberSoIDo · 24/12/2020 13:08

May they rest in peace. My 2002/3 passed some time ago but tomorrow morning I shall be opening a new set, as will my dd due to a complete debacle which I wouldn't dare bore anyone with so we will go from none to two sets in mere minutes 🙈

Squiffany · 24/12/2020 13:11

Cloud 9 are excellent quality and give great results

Bless your lovely GHDs, I hope you can get them repaired. I bought mine back in 2006 from my student loan, probably one of the best things to come out of my degree Grin
I rarely use them nowadays however my teen DD has nabbed them and still going strong.

NaePies · 24/12/2020 13:15

My 2006 pink GHD’s were repaired twice before giving up in 2017
I replaced with corioliss ones and highly recommend them, the new ghds are not good

Sorry for your loss op

WhatKatyDidNxt · 24/12/2020 13:18

RIP sorry for your loss. It is important to remember the good times you had together. They don’t make them like that anymore (people say newer models of straighteners are shit).

I’m watching this thread with interest as l have gone hair as well. People talk about cloud 9 ones a lot.

@PowerhouseOfTheCell a friend of mine once kneeled on her straighteners Shock

WhatKatyDidNxt · 24/12/2020 13:19

@JesusInTheCabbageVan Grin. This thread has tickled me

Megan2018 · 24/12/2020 13:20

So sorry for your loss Sad

Mine are from approx 1998 although not been switched on for about 5 years so I’m not 100% sure if they still work. I was a student when I bought them and they were a big purchase for me at the time. They’ve seen me through my wild child Uni days, work, first house and many others, marriage and a child. I don’t think I will throw them even if they have died.

CottonSock · 24/12/2020 13:20

The platinum ones are still decent. My cloud 9s did not last much more than a year.

WhatKatyDidNxt · 24/12/2020 13:26

Duh l meant fine hair!

KnitFastDieWarm · 24/12/2020 13:39

Ah OP, sympathies at this difficult time! Grin Flowers
My trusty 2007 GHDs would still be going strong if DH hadn’t trodden on them last year while we were moving house Hmm To be fair, i’d not used them to straighten my hair since about 2011 (they did occasionally emerge from retirement for weddings and parties when I wanted old hollywood waves).
These days I wear my hair naturally wavy and can’t believe what I used to put it through heatwise! Good old poker straight 2000s hair...

Monstermissy36 · 24/12/2020 13:43

My Futura straighteners lasted 15 years before they died.... I was very sad! My brother bought them for me when straightening hair was fairly new and you could only buy them at the hairdressers! I replaced them with GHDs and it's not the same!

Moltenpink · 24/12/2020 13:45

Hey op, my 2002 ones were resurrected by a friend who changed the plug on them for me. Still going strong now.

SenorFrog · 24/12/2020 13:45

One of the founders of GHD owns Cloud9. IMO the best on the market currently.

viques · 24/12/2020 13:47

I feel your pain. I dread to think how old mine are, and every time I switch them on I go full Aretha (say a little prayer!). I hope Santa hears your pain and does the right thing.

Santa is gifting my dd the ghd brush this year. I have had a little look at it and will be interested to see how it compares, but her hair doesn’t have my wilfulness so I don’t think the brush would work for me. I’ll stick to what I have, and hope they live on for a few more years.

ArialAnna · 24/12/2020 13:52

Forgive me if this is a silly question, but have you tried replacing the fuse in the plug? They can give out. Mine did, and a simple fuse replacement sorted it out. They are still going strong today (can't remember when I got them but it's definitely over 10 years ago)

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/12/2020 14:04

I replaced mine with kipozi wide plates too off amazon.

Derelictwreck · 24/12/2020 14:10

I have too pairs. 2005 and 2010. 2005's are used daily and still going strong! Neither pair have even had to be repaired. I love them.

CheesePuns · 24/12/2020 14:11

I haven’t, I’ll definitely look at a repair in the new year, covid allowing. They’re turning on but just not getting very hot at all.

I remember the poker straight 2000s hair looked so fresh and modern after bouffant 80s and short choppy 90s hair! I was very jealous of a girl in my 6th form that had straightened long dark hair with chunky blonde highlights so it almost looked stripy Grin

Love and light at this very sad time.
Mine are 10 years old today from a boyfriend long departed

It was the dream

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/12/2020 14:37

I was working by then so I had those highlights 🤦🏻‍♀️

firstimemamma · 24/12/2020 14:38

My thoughts are with you op, that's devastating Thanks

Mine are still going strong and have been for the last 9 years. Your post has reminded me I should never take them for granted.

Layoverlife · 24/12/2020 14:39

Have a look on Vinted, I was dreading buying new ghd's when I had to replace mine after using for them years as I had heard they are not the same anymore, I was able to replace the exact same ones from Vinted again at a fraction of a price! Smile

ShirleyPhallus · 24/12/2020 14:43

I’m so sorry OP. This year has been tough for so many Flowers I shall singe my tips in your honour

Mine were loyal to me for years but in the end I got coriolis which are brilliant
