Empty supermarkets!!

girlcrushonvillanelle · 24/12/2020 09:36

Been to 3 different supermarkets this morning, had to pick to various bits.

All eerily quiet.

9am on Xmas eve I was fully expecting to queue for hours.

Car parks half empty, picked from 5 empty check outs.

Wow!!

I went to two yesterday one at about 9 and the other about 10, both as quiet as anything.

Hangingover · 24/12/2020 11:02

Same here, it's great. Feel like I've double bluffed everyone.

I even swiped the only plant based chocolate torte in the place. Happy me!

Oldraver · 24/12/2020 11:06

I had too ok queue for 10 minutes yesterday to get into Waitrose at 7.29 but others have been empty

Fruitinator · 24/12/2020 11:08

Same here- I nipped in Tesco for some milk and it was deserted.
The only things missing from the shelves were a bit of veg & party nibble food from the fridge section.

When I did my big shop on Monday morning it was manic, the lady on the checkout said Sunday was worse, craziest day she had seen for years.

cariadlet · 24/12/2020 11:11

I went to Tesco and M&S this morning. Both seemed reasonably busy but certainly not packed; I didn't have to queue to get in or at the tills.

@Hangingover I picked up a pack with 2 slices of plant based chocolate torte at M and S. I'm making cheesecake later so didn't need them but they were yellow stickered so couldn't resist. Also got some yellow stickered plant kitchen No Turkey Feast sandwiches for lunch. I'm very happy.

I went to Sainsbury's this morning for a few last minute bits and it was dead.

They had at least 6 marshals in the carpark waving people in with batons! They looked like right wallys directing people into an empty carpark!

I was a bit annoyed because I couldn't park in my very favourite space which was empty, but not where the marshal had in mind.

unmarkedbythat · 24/12/2020 11:14

I went into a Primark yesterday for the first time since January and it was dead. None of the supermarkets were particularly busy either. People were queuing for Pandora though.

I’d have wound my window down and asked the baton waver if I could park in my favourite space! I hate when my parking routine gets interrupted! Xmas Blush

I’m glad I’m not the only one with a favourite parking space.

I bet a lot of people shopped Monday or Tuesday due to what's currently happening.

I would not leave a Xmas shop until Xmas Eve and I suspect a lot of others haven't either.
Only popping out for extras I guess.

Saying that my DP went to Asda this morning and was fairly busy. Different every where though

MaverickDanger · 24/12/2020 11:32

We’re not long back from collecting our click & collect Christmas order.

DH went in and said it was dead in Sainsburys. I’m half tempted in future years just to leave everything until today to go and buy!

Chemenger · 24/12/2020 11:33

I got my favourite parking space yesterday. All the shops were dead quiet. I think you could probably get a full Christmas dinner for about £10 last thing today, because it looks like there will be a lot of unsold stock (probably the turkey will feed 20, I think the small ones are going fastest).

rainbowscalling · 24/12/2020 11:35

I went yesterday at about 5:30pm and everywhere was quite quiet. I had to go to Tesco and asda to get what I needed but no queues going in. Coming out of Tesco later though there was a queue.

However my parents are picking something up from Argos for me today and they queued for 1 hour! By the time they left the shop assistant said the queue was estimated 2hrs 30mins long!

reefedsail · 24/12/2020 11:38

Ha! Waving to the other people with a supermarket parking space of their own. Xmas Grin

Livpool · 24/12/2020 11:39

My DM went to Tesco this morning and said it was empty

Redcherries · 24/12/2020 11:42

Omg, I too have a favourite parking space 😂

Buffy81 · 24/12/2020 11:42

I popped into Morrisons this morning to get some bits like bread and milk so that we would have enough to last until at least Monday and it was busy, but like a Sunday morning busy. Was expecting it to be a lot busier seeing as will be moving it to tier 4 on Boxing day.

I think the thing with Christmas eve is that you will never be able to tell what it is going to be like. I remember when I used to work for a toy shop, one year town was heaving, the following year it was really quite

MangoM · 24/12/2020 11:44

Morrisons here (outskirts of Leeds) was very empty this morning too. Quietest it's been in ages!

I did a click and collect from Argos too and walked straight in. Weird, considering Argos has always had long queues every time I've walked past the last few months.

BooBahBoo · 24/12/2020 11:44

My local one is packed. Drove past and the queue of cars trying to get out was over 10 at least. I had to go yesterday and it was fairly busy, too.

notangelinajolie · 24/12/2020 11:45

Supermarkets are always quiet on Christmas Eve.

BooBahBoo · 24/12/2020 11:47

Also I have a fav space, too. A p&c one right beside the little shelter where trolleys go. Super handy for returning the trolley with two young kids as they can be in the car and you don't have to leave them out of sight. I'm always gutted when it's taken!

skankingpiglet · 24/12/2020 11:50

I went to Waitrose last night. It was fairly busy but they had loads left. The man behind the meat counter said they still had a load of beef ribs to shift. They were reduced by 1/3 (along with almost everything else on the counter), but I bet that's been knocked down even more today. I had already got a turkey for tomorrow, but now have a large rib of beef to look forward to in the freezer for January Grin

Ultimateblends · 24/12/2020 11:51

We went asda and aldi yesterday to avoid going today.
Quiet, no problem parking or getting food, everything still in stock, couldn't belive the amount of turkeys available! But I am guessing people aren't buying as no big gatherings!

Very strange, but absolutely relieved and really enjoyed shopping!

Skipsurvey · 24/12/2020 11:59

from experience it is always quiet on christmas eve

LEELULUMPKIN · 24/12/2020 12:00

I went off to asda yesterday at 4pm and in the manner of Lawrence Oats said to DH "I'm going outside, I may be some time."

I was back in half an hour, it was dead! Shelves fully stocked everything that I have been buying a bit at a time was all available.

Way better and easier than any usual Christmas.

We are Tier 2 NW England.
