Bread Sauce. No bayleafs

Does it matter? Am planning on making this for the first time but don’t have bayleafs. Are they essential?

Well, it's pretty boring without IMO, but thyme would probably sub in ok. Nutmeg and cloves. It's basically thickened cream with aromatic herbs/spices so the herbs and spices do make it.

Nope, you can still make a lovely one with just bread, milk and cloves. Optional extras:

Cream
Black pepper
Butter
Nutmeg

Definitely doable without! Ask around neighbours through - I have a bay tree in front of my house and am very happy for neighbours to take the odd one for cooking with (as I do).

I have cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon. I have dropped presents round to various friends and totally forgot to ask if they could give me a bayleaf. Kicking myself now.
