Can anyone explain Kindle Whispersync please?

I'd like to be able to switch between reading a book on Kindle and listening to it on audiobook. Is that what Whispersync does? I have a basic kindle, 8th generation, 3 years old and, from what I can gather, I can't use this with Whispersync. What kind of Kindle do I need? Is it only some books that can be used with Whispersync? Do I need to pay a monthly subscription to Audible or do I need Audible at all, or something else? Once set up, is it very easy to switch between Kindle and audiobook without losing place? Is there anything else I need know but haven't thought of?

You just need to Google it. That seems to be exactly what it does. You can flip between reading and listening. It only seems to be specific books though not the Audible ones. I think it probably tells you when you are looking at the books on Amazon.

I've goggled, but can't seem to work out which Kindles do/don't work with Whispersync. I know the Kindle Oasis does, but not sure about cheaper versions, like my basic Kindle. So, not sure if I'd need to upgrade to a Kindle Oasis, or if an upgrade to a Kindle Paperwhite would do, or if I need to upgrade at all. Would love to hear from anyone who has used it and whether they think it's worth it or not.

Never tried it but if you google whispersync on kindle paperwhite it will show you how to do it.
