Are there still serial killers today?

I'm just watching the Yorkshire ripper documentary. All the famous serial killers seem to be 1960s-1980s, Dennis Nielsen, moors murderers, Ted bundy, zodiac. Are modern ones just not publicised the same?

When the victims don't matter, they're more likely to get away with it. The Cypriot serial killer Nikos Metaxas targeted Nepalese, Filipino and Romanian women who were seen as worthless here and would never be missed. All the women were reported missing but the police didn't bother pursuing it, they were just lowly immigrant maids. After it all came out, the Chief of Police was sacked and the Minister of Justice resigned.

The Long Island Serial killer is believed to have operated around 2010-2013. Has never been caught so might still be killing people but hiding the bodies better, or moved to a different area.

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/12/2020 21:18

There’s probably more than you’d think. There’s a road in Canada where indigenous Canadian girls hitch hike into town & loads have gone missing and no arrests.

JacobReesMogadishu · 22/12/2020 21:18

@Christmasfairy2020

Angel of death steeping hill Also that nurse that killed all them babies
Beverley Allit?

Because the more recent nurse has not been found guilty of anything.

@Thehogfatherstolemycurry

Also this thread has reminded me how much I miss Criminal Minds Grin
Currently the entire 14 series streaming on Amazon. If you need a catch up over the break, not very festive admittedly
AIMD · 22/12/2020 21:21

I imagine the way murder happens might change over time.
Must be much harder to get away with murder since the advent of phones, CCTV, internet searches, DNA advancement.

Imagine there are also a few active though...:just we don’t find out about them until after the fact.

notafanoftheman · 22/12/2020 21:22

Other theories accounting for the decline are the ban on leaded petrol and the legalisation of abortion.

The Manchester Pusher is nonsense and ISTR the theory of someone targeting elderly couples was also debunked.

frogswimming · 22/12/2020 21:24

"Other theories accounting for the decline are the ban on leaded petrol and the legalisation of abortion."

Why's that?

I think sometimes the ones that are close to you are the ones you know - so Levi Bellfield was active around here....but does 3 murders and one attempted count as a series?

grassisjeweled · 22/12/2020 21:25

Was going to say the Manchester Pusher and the fella killing old couples up North.

Sorry for being vague

DulciUke · 22/12/2020 21:28

I'm sure that we still have 30 at any given time here in the US. The smart ones have changed their m.o. (look up Israel Keyes). They recently discovered one that has been killing for 50 yearsSamuel Little. He focused on sex workers, drug addicts, homeless, etc women across many states--. He's claimed 93. They've been able to tie him to 50 so far. And the sad thing is, he was arrested many times, even charged with murder. But he always got off, because the jury would have reasonable doubt. His word over that of a street person. He deliberately chose that type of victim.

But the OP's question was more about the UK. I'm sure that there's still serial killers there, but, as has been mentioned, the technology of today makes them easier to catch. All those security cameras...

Moondust001 · 22/12/2020 21:29

Stephen Griffiths - 2010.

notafanoftheman · 22/12/2020 21:34

Leaded petrol causing dysfunctional behaviour and fœtuses being aborted rather than being born to abusive families and growing up as killers.

Missing & Murdered indigenous women in both Canada and the USA is a major issue, and there is no evidence per se that there are serial killers responsible. The problem here is that indigenous women are third class citizens - sometimes not even viewed as human. Whilst, like other vulnerable groups, they may be more likely to be considered pickings for serial killers, the routine disappearance of indigenous women across the continent is a symptom of mainstream societies that do not value them. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missing_and_murdered_Indigenous_women
MissDollyMix · 22/12/2020 21:39

I wonder what role the internet has to play in satiating the sick and twisted minds of would-be killers. It may be that those who would previously have stalked the streets looking for real life victims, now do so online.

Titsinknicks · 22/12/2020 21:40

I wouldn't assume a killer has been prosecuted for all crimes committed. Let's imagine they've been put in jail for three murders. If more come to light they may not have enough evidence or whatever and given the suspect is already in jail for ever it might not be worth spending squllions of public money on prosecuting them for more. Also victims may be on the fringes of society and not 'noticed' missing for a long time.

There are definitely serial killers about.

BorderlineHappy · 22/12/2020 21:40

Theres always serial killers. Some are only caught because they make a mistake.

Some are caught years later,The Golden State Killer was only caught last year. And hes in his 70/80s now.

Some stop, some die, some are in prison.
But they are definitely out there.

notafanoftheman · 22/12/2020 21:40

No further investigation into the so-called elderly couples killer: www.whitehavennews.co.uk/news/18695295.no-new-investigation-series-murder-suicides-say-police/

PaintTheFence · 22/12/2020 21:47

Israel Keyes was a fairly recent serial killer in the states that you don't hear much about.

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/12/2020 21:47

I’m not convinced about the elderly murder suicides, if you were going to do that would you not chose a less traumatic end for your spouse?.

Why wait till your both gone to bed?.

Longdistance · 22/12/2020 21:48

Isn’t it usually that there’s a pattern to their murders, hence serial killer? They’d kill someone, police cannot find the murderer, someone else would get killed in similar circumstances, no links etc, etc, leading the police on a wild goose chase.
Got to agree about the Manchester pusher. There’s something going on there.

BorderlineHappy · 22/12/2020 21:51

@Longdistance
They are called serial killers because they kill 3 or more victims with a space in between.
Definition.
A serial killer is typically a person who murders three or more people, usually in service of abnormal psychological gratification, with the murders taking place over more than a month and including a significant period of time between them. While most authorities set a threshold of three murders, others extend it to four or lessen it to two.

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/12/2020 21:57

Birmingham’s got a gay quarter near the canals, how many young men drown there?.

notafanoftheman · 22/12/2020 21:57

if you were going to do that would you not chose a less traumatic end for your spouse

Not necessarily. Dementia / elder spousal abuse can include high levels of violence.
