Christmas Traditions Around World - quiz

doadeer · 22/12/2020 18:12

Hi

Planning a family quiz as we are tier 4 and I'm going to do my round on traditions around the world to do with festive time.

Eg which country was the first to have a Christmas tree as we know it today?

Does anyone have any good questions I could use?

Have a matching round?
eg give a list of different names for Santa people have to guess their countries/languages (or match them with countries from a list if you think guessing would be too frustrating?)

elQuintoConyo · 22/12/2020 18:31

try my quiz

It's nearly finished. You'll have to sift through for country-based questions.

I can PM you the last questions of you like. I have questions about the Christmas Eve pooing log, the Christmas tree decorated with spiders, Australia, Russia, Wales, Scotland....

I'm watching with interest as we are doing similar on Boxing day. Look up Dutch Christmas traditions I think they have some fairly different ones, also the French have a 'bad' Santa Claus. Le Père Fouettard.

I can definately add a question on this. I only have 10 questions so can't do a whole round but good idea!

Which country has a wooden uncle that shits sweets in the run up to Xmas?

Spain (Catalonia) - Tió de Nadal aka Caga Tió

In Germany Nikolaus is celebrated on 6 December as an early Christmas treat. Good children wake up and find sweeties!

  • what task do children have to do the night before if they want to receive their goodies?
Answer: they have to clean a pair of shoes/boots and put them out for Nikolaus to 'inspect' and put the sweets into.
  • what do 'naughty' children receive instead of sweets?
Answer: a rod made of twigs (so they can be whipped for their failings).

Spain and lots of countries have the three kings/wise men bringing presents. You could ask for their names (Melchior, Balthasar and Caspar)

In the Basque Country, we don't have Father Christmas, we have a coal-god called Olentzero.

In Japan, the most common Xmas day meal is KFC!

RuleOfCat · 22/12/2020 19:06
