a pregnancy announcement? Genuine question. They're going to find out anyway.

There have been a few threads lately where 1950s1 has tried to suck any joy or humour out.

Bitter much??

Are they meant to find out when it starts primary school or is a casual mention whilst doing the dishes allowed?

LittleRa · 22/12/2020 16:25

Who is “they” and how will “they find out anyway?
If “they” is your friends and family, how will they find out without you telling them?
You have to tell them for them to find out. If you have quite a lot of people you want to tell (close family, extended family, colleagues, friends, acquaintances) then it is quicker and easier to “announce” it to everyone all at once. For this, some people like to do a cute social media message, sometimes with a photo of a baby grow or something like that, just for fun and to be happy and pleasant.
You don’t have to make a big deal of an announcement (though it’s totally people’s prerogative should they choose to) but I don’t know how you expect “them” to find out without being told in some way or form?!

I once had a colleague who didn’t announce her pregnancy or even tell anyone. We watched her get larger and larger over the weeks and her line manager even tried to prompt during one-to-ones with vague things like “do you have anything you need to tell me?”, but nobody wanted to actually ask because... well, you aren’t supposed to ask somebody if they’re pregnant, are you? In case they’re just putting on weight. Even though she obviously just wasn’t.

Anyway, one day she just disappeared and her line manager told us a couple of days later that she’d received a call saying the baby had been born, which was the first the line manager had heard about anything.

Thoroughly odd situation and to this day I’ve no idea whether she just didn’t want people to know, didn’t think it was worth announcing, or was in denial herself, or what.

TL;DR - yes, they’ll find out anyway, but it makes the whole journey a lot less weird for everyone if you announce. Also it’s quite nice news, isn’t it?

I honestly don't really understand humour
