Have I been stupid in thinking it was just a cold and cough?

I’m so worried. My DC started reception this September and she’s had 4 colds so far, so we’ve all had 4 colds. About 2 weeks ago we got a cold that had a bit of a cough to it. No temps, all seemed like a normal cold. We’ve since been told someone in her class tested positive and then negative so they probably had the virus 10+ days ago or thereabouts hence the positive/negative results because they’re no longer shedding.

I’m now really worried the last ‘cold’ wasn’t just a cold. I’m two weeks on and still have the cough and a sore chest. I can’t get tested because I’ve beyond the window for a test.

I don’t know what to think I suppose there’s nothing I can do is there? I can’t get tested.

I don’t go anywhere just food shopping and school run.

You probably should have got a test for the cough but hey.... it still probably was just a cold - there are loads of them around still

You should have been tested at the time. Why on earth did you not?

Um, in the nicest possible way, it wasn’t very sensible to not get tested when you both developed a cough. Especially if someone in your daughter’s class has tested positive it seems quite likely that that’s what you’ve both had. My son was in contact with a positive test, and he and I both then had a horrible cold/cough that lasted 2 weeks. We both got tested, twice, because I was sure we would be positive, but the results came back negative.

It was more than likely just a bad cold, and yours is too, sorry.

You probably should have got a test (and isolated!) but you're out of the timeframe now. But what difference does it make now knowing whether it is COVID or not? If you're ill you're ill. Chances are you will get better but if you don't the NHS is there to treat you. Knowing it's COVID or not at this stage doesn't make a difference.

I can't leave the house, watch the tv or look at social media without seeing an ad reminding me to test if I develop any of the 'big 3' symptoms, and yet there are so many people who still don't because they convince themselves it's not Covid.

That's not the point. You're not supposed to only get tested if you think you've got Covid, you're supposed to get a test if you have any of the three symptoms.

You need to isolate for 10 days from onset of symptoms.

I was convinced I had a cold- took a test as DD and DP had symptoms about 2-3 days later and we were all positive!

I’m not sure what to call it that there were coughs involved and you sent to reception class and also carried on yourself as normal.

Oh yes, I’ve thought of a word! It’s ‘selfish’.

My ds had a cold followed by cough a couple of weeks ago

I was convinced cough and cold but got him tested and self isolated till we got a negative result. I did that to protect others. Cost me a days pay however i care about the people more.

You will never know but have to live with that.

I honestly don’t know how much more educating can be done regarding this. New cough = get a test.

My DC had a headache followed by a new cough. We got them a test and guess what? It was positive. No one else in their class tested positive. Maybe we were just lucky but I honestly believe that’s because we acted so quickly and followed all the guidance about testing and isolating the whole household. We got the test within 12 hours of the cough starting.

And before anyone starts saying it must be wonderful to be so perfect etc etc all we did was follow the guidance correctly and immediately.

It probably was just a cold but you never know (if you don’t get tested.) My own child developed a snotty nose and minor cough while isolating as there was a child in their class with COVID. It was negative. So you’ll probably have some of the thread commenting like me or the other half exclaiming their kid just had a stomach ache and tested positive 🤷🏻‍♀️

My child’s test was negative I meant to say.

That's why everyone with a cough needs to get tested!
