Does anyone drive a Freelander 2?

Looking for an older car with decent boot space (for dog and sometimes pushchair) that won't get stuck in mud. I drive a Panda 4x4 and love it but dh needs something big enough to stick his kayak on top.
I like the look of them and want to test one when we are allowed but wondered if anyone can tell me how reliable or not they are!

Very reliable but boot not actually that big.

Also, they haven't made them since 2014 so it's quite hard to find one that hasn't done a lot of miles/towed a horse box around.

I do! I LOVE it! The boot space is huge - was always able to fit a bugaboo in easily and the dog was able to hop up.

It drives like a regular sized car - you don’t need bigger parking spaces and all that.

I heard endless warnings of oh no... but I’ve had two freelanders in 14 years and they were both great. I was always told to get a Diesel engine though and never the petrol model.

I also towed horses very easily with it. I need to change car again sometime soon and I’m on the lookout now for what to go for. I live in the country and it’s sometimes flooded, often icy, and I am always the one able to get out and about.

As you can probably guess yes I would recommend one

I'd be looking for a diesel anyway.. our current old estate has well over 100k on it so not worried about mileage (passing it to dd2 as her dh's car won't fit a pram in) We live in the countryside and have some spectacularly horrible country lanes ..and my previous little car..a Twingo got embarrassingly stuck in the mud!
Boot needs to be big enough to take either dog (medium large) or pram.. one or other can go in the back seat as I'm going to do granny care a few days of the week.
Other suggestions also welcomed..budget is 7k max.

If you want a huge boot look for a Disco, they are a bit more expensive than the freely but they are bigger. Only downside to discos is they can be hit and miss under car park barriers.

I have the FL2 and find the boot space great. They are older but the higher mileage isn't necessarily an issue as it's one of the last properly built land rovers. Check for service history, especially to the Haldex unit and it needs a new timing chain at 120k from memory.
The HSE is the top spec, you'll pay a bit more for that. Mine is the XS but whoever bought it originally paid for all the extras so it's essentially the HSE without the price tag.

There are a few Facebook groups, some have cars that have gone over 300k with little issues. Worth joining as members often sell cars on there and they usually have been well looked after.

I have had 2 of them and they are brilliant. The boot actually isn't that big though. The Discovery Sport was the replacement but is a totally different car.

I think unless you're heading into car parks regularly you're probably better with the Disco 3.

For your budget expect about 2 or 3 years older than the FL2. One here as a guide. This has the auto box, which on Land Rovers are extremely reliable:

We bought one from somebody who was going to work abroad and needed to sell his car the last day he was in the country, so got it cheap.
It was top of the range, leather heated seats, parking sensors, sat nav etc.
It was bloody awful, felt very unstable and floaty. It sat idle for a year, whilst dh and I drove our other cars.
Wouldn't give you a thank you for one.
Kept it a year, advertised it on Autotrader, got a call within the hour and a dealer came and picked it up the next day, so somebody likes them.

Fuss thanks for the link.. I'll show dh . We do need to get into carparks unfortunately ... not when the Kayak's on top tho The Disco 3 looks fab but the fuel consumption is a bit ouch! Mind you I only get high 40s out of my diesel Panda 4x4... (brilliant little car as my dog wagon but need a bigger one for camping and tip runs!)

There is a garage 20 miles away which has a few in so once open I'm going to check a few out :)

I lurve my freelander 2. The disco sport is not a patch on it, so many quality issues and believe me when I say I know that officially. I have a 2012 diesel FL2 and it is fab. The belts need doing on them at around 7 years so when buying do look for one that's had belts changed.
I have a massive pushchair and it fits easily in the boot with room for other things e.g. Weekend bags.
The rear seats are the perfect height for lifting kids into.
It is very easy to park.
The heated windscreen is always a bonus.
