Chaos Walking trilogy for 13yo?

I’m just looking for some books for DS, 13, and came across this trilogy (The Knife of Never Letting Go, The Ask and the Answer, and Monsters of Men) by Patrick Ness, never heard of him or the books but apparently they’ve been successful/popular.

Does anyone know these books? And would you recommend them for a 13yo?

Thanks!

I've read them. I think they are aimed at a teenage audience. There is some hard going topics (think mass genocide, colonisation etc) but I think they are handled in an age appropriate way. There's nothing too graphic if I recall correctly (I don't like reading graphic violence).

What i would say though is the first book is written from the point of view of one character but then it changes in subsequent books. I didn't like the character in the other books, didn't think the character was particularly well thought out etc.

DS 14 has read them and says 12+.

Thanks for that, that’s helpful, especially that the violence is handled in an age-appropriate way.

Did you/your DS enjoy them?

I've read and enjoyed them, would agree that they're good for that age group. Easy to read but some important themes in there. IIRC they do get progressively darker, with the third having obvious parallels to the Holocaust.

I hated them for the amount of brutality and killing but they are well written and not particularly graphic.

Thank you both, very helpful

This is really helpful! Thanks very much for that, really appreciate it.

I’m still undecided about Chaos Walking, but have ordered Ready Player One - he’s a total gamer so should enjoy that!

Cheers - and Merry Christmas all Smile

My 13 year old DD read them from the school library, loved them and has ordered a set from Santa!

NinjaClash · 24/12/2020 11:23

Thank you for that.

I think on reflection that he will enjoy them more when he’s a few months older, and also he’s got a fair few unread books still sitting waiting, so I’m going to save getting those for his birthday.

Thank you all who replied, really helpful!
