Stupid question about a fire stick and an old tv

My mum likes to use our netflix when she is at our house. She's not been here since February, for obvious reasons.

I'd like to give her a fire stick for christmas. We could then watch the same box set and it'd give us something to talk about.

Her tv is 20 years old and she does not want to change it as it is "totally fine". I thought the fire stick needs a USB port - but a neighbour told me that it just needs a "special plug thing"

Does anyone know if a fire stick can work on a 20 year old tv, and what a Special Plug Thing might be?

I have googled, and am absolutely none the wiser.

HDMI port?
If the tv has one I'd say it's fine

It needs an HDMI port. My 20 yr old TV has one and I'm like your DM and refuse to buy another until this one stops working!

But it won't work without the port, which you can't buy as an extra as far as I'm aware.

Ask her for the model of the TV and Google?

FeelingForced · 20/12/2020 11:05

It has to be plugged into an HDMI port on the TV and it also needs a power plug.

Ah. I see what the problem is...I muddled a USB and an HDMI up.

What a moron.

Thanks all, that is very helpful!

I don't think you are a moron. I'm pretty sure our one goes into a usb so it can be both.

You can buy a scart-to- HDMI adaptor for old TVs which should work with a Fire Stick.

It needs HDMI to put picture and sound onto the TV. USB is for powering the Firestick.
