Questions about Sainsbury's Smart Shop app

Just downloaded this in the hope it'll make the food shop a bit easier this week. I've read the FAQs on the Sainsbury's website but I'm still a bit confused as to how it works in store, mainly:

Can I just put the items in my shopping bags as I go round, or do I have to load the trolley and pack after?

Where / how do I pay? I assumed it be able to link the app to my bank card or something but it doesn't seem to work like that?

Anything else I should know?! Tips for making it easier? Thanks all!

I'm not usually this technophobic, honest!

I use this every week. You scan with your phone and pack as you go. You then go to a smart shop till and scan the QR code on the till. Then pay as normal :)

I wouldn't recommend it personally. I tried it once, got a huge amount of shopping in the trolley then the thing froze. Apparently there wasn't enough signal to transfer to the data on to another one so I then had to queue up normally to put through the till anyway. Also I feel sorry for all the cashiers being put out of a job.

If its like the other supermarket apps then you scan your shopping and pack it as you go round. Then when you get to the till you may have to tell the till you are using the app (like in asda) and then it transfers the details from your phone to the till so that you can pay. Doesn't need linking to a card as you choose payment method at the till

Pack in your bag. Pay at the self pay checkout. I've been checked once and, annoyingly, on one shop the shopping wouldn't upload to the till so it had to be fully scanned at a normal checkout. Otherwise it works well. If the item doesn't scan easily I find it is better to take your mobile away and try again. Don't just hover over the bar code forever!

Thanks all. I've just remembered my phone signal is always shite in Sainsbury's, if I ever need to what's app DH I have to walk to the front of the store to do it. Is that going to cause a problem do you think?

You could always give it a go and see how well it works. If it doesn't then you can clear the shopping from your phone and get it scanned how you usually do.

Another thing to remember, and I learnt this the hard way, but you can only pay by card at the smart shop tills. Or at least that's the case at my local store. Got caught out and had to unpack onto a normal till again Confused

You use the WiFi of the shop, so mobile reception shouldn't be a problem.
I use my mobile but they've re-introduced the handsets at our local Sainsbury's, which are probably quicker and easier to use.

It's the same as using the beeper yourself. Just scan and bag as you go.

Then at the end tap the checkout button and scan the QR code on the scan as you shop machine.

I always use it as saves me touching one of their scanners.
