What on earth is going on with cream these days??

For the second time in recent weeks, I've just used some double cream which was 10 days over the use by date. It was opened about 2 weeks ago and there was about half a pot of it.

It's absolutely fine. Smells fine, tastes fine, hasn't separated. How on earth is this possible? Do you think it's actually real cream?

Pasturised cream does keep for ages, much longer than the dates ever say.

SkepticalCat · 19/12/2020 13:42

I've always found that cream lasts ages, and way past the use by date.

I think it's true of milk too.
Sometimes the date is about 10 days away. I'm sure when I was little and we had daily milk deliveries it had to be used within a few days or it went off.

Switch to filtered milk, it lasts forever.

Mind blowing.

I had similar recently. A pot of double cream open for about a fortnight, & when I finished the pot it was at least a week over the use by date, & still fine. I checked it every day. Not even a hard lid on it, just that silly peel- off lid.

I’m sure our doorstep milk doesn’t last as long though. Maybe the pasteurisation process is different.

The dates are ridiculously conservative. That's the issue not the cream.

They put the date based on someone taking a couple of hours to get it home in a warm car and their fridge being too warm, so if neither of these apply, it lasts for weeks.

With cream, I always expect it to be good for at least a fortnight after the date, so would be annoyed if it didn't.

Glad to know it's not just me then! Although it will mean that I'll eat more cream ... Still, it is Christmas! Thanks all.

Yes, I agree supermarket milk lasts ages but doorstep milk doesn't, even in winter. Why is that?
