Bra sizes - help needed

So usually wear 36DD but just felt they were getting a bit tight. So bought 36E which turns out is massive (straight back for refund). Please can anyone shed any light on what size to try next ? Thanks in advance.

Is it getting tight at the back? Or are the cups too small too?

I read somewhere that if the back is too tight then you go up a back size, and down a cup size. I have tried this myself and it worked perfectly.
