I'm calling from the Ulster Bank to tell you about fraudulent activity on your account

I almost fell for this a while ago when I was a NatWest customer and I didn't know they could spoof the phone number - telling me that the phone no they were ringing from was the same as the one on the bank of my card. Luckily I couldn't remember any of my log in details so said I'd ring them back, and rang the fraud department on a different phone.
What I want to know is how they know some of your details (enough to be convincing) and also what kind of person would knowingly ring up people to defraud them?
Just wanted to let people know about the spoofing and also to use a different phone to call back as they apparently can play the "dead" tone so you think you have hung up but haven't. Angry
