Works zoom Christmas Party

It’s my works Christmas party over zoom tomorrow. It’s going to be about an hour long with a quiz/wearing Christmas jumpers.

For context I’ve been in this job for 6 months and it’s my first job post grad so I haven’t ever had the pleasure of a work Christmas party haha. Everyone I work with is lovely but I don’t get to interact much with people outside of my team. I’m in a permanent WFH position.

It’s my day off tomorrow so I’m not obligated to attend. But this feels like a ‘join in’ thing with people on annual leave planning to attend too.

What would you do enjoy my day off or suck it up and go?

Definitely attend. It's really important to make an effort in a new job.

PenOrPencil · 14/12/2020 19:59

It’s an hour and will help you get to know your team better. If it’s too awful you can always have wifi problems!

SirSamuelVimes · 14/12/2020 20:01

I'd rather poke myself in the eye with a rusty spoon.

Sounds awful. But yes, you should try to go!

XherdanShaqiri · 14/12/2020 20:09

I was in a similar position with similar reservations last week - ended up really enjoying it!

Howzaboutye · 14/12/2020 20:10

Yes go. It may well be dire, but at least better than in person!

Ellmau · 14/12/2020 20:22

It's only an hour and it's on zoom so you can do it from home. Make the effort.

Gossipgirl2 · 14/12/2020 20:44

Thanks for helping me decide. Hopefully it won’t be as awful as I’m imagining!

It might be really good fun x go and at least say hi to all the team

Personally I would attend - but if I wasn’t enjoying it, I may develop sudden technical issues.... oops, mute, look puzzled and switch off.

RedRec · 14/12/2020 21:40

Exactly like a pp, I would 'rather poke myself in the eye with a rusty spoon'.

Hawkins001 · 14/12/2020 22:29

Always intriguing to see various personalities, especially when it's less formal as it gives more insight to the character.

PhilCornwall1 · 15/12/2020 05:43

Ours was Friday gone, planned for 2 hours.

I "did" the quiz, well not really, just gave them a score at the end and made sure I came last, then bailed. I think in all I was on it for 20 minutes. It started at 4:30pm, so started in work time, I was offline for 5pm.

iwasacceptableinthe80s · 15/12/2020 06:21

I would attend just to show willing. I personally think the idea of a Zoom Christmas party is awful. I've got one coming up on Friday, and it's now been announced at short notice that they want someone from each team to give a speech. This has gone down like a lead balloon. I dislike the enforced jollity of an actual work Christmas party, let alone remotely. I don't usually drink, but may need a gin in this instance!

charlieclown · 15/12/2020 06:26

Ours is 3h long which seems about 2h more than reasonable.

I have to go because I am leaving the org next week and I am sure there will be a speech etc. I just hope it is at the beginning so I can duck out during

BashfulClam · 15/12/2020 09:33

I am dreading it. I avoid Christmas parties and i’m off on the day but as I’m new as well (started in March) I feel I should turn up for the 1st one.

BarbaraofSeville · 15/12/2020 09:46

It sounds fun. Never understood the hatred on here for any form of socialisation with work colleagues.

And for someone new to the organisation, it's definitely a chance to get to know people you may not have interacted with before.

PhilCornwall1 · 15/12/2020 12:00

Because for me, that's all they are, work colleagues and nothing more.

DelphineWalsh · 15/12/2020 12:08

We had ours last night, they hired a entertainments company to manage the whole thing with play along horse racing and blackjack tables in breakout zoom rooms. It was very well orchestrated and the presenters were very engaging considering how hard it must be to try and muster some enthusiasm from over 150 people sat at home. After the casino stuff they had a live band. Our company had sent out hampers to everyone ahead of time so we would have a drink on them.

I think it helped that there was quite a lot of us so it wasn't so noticable if someone turned the camera off or snuck away early.

nosswith · 15/12/2020 13:08

I would not describe it as pleasure, and would not attend if it was a day off. If only to set the boundary that holidays/days off should be taken.

Tink1990 · 15/12/2020 13:12

Ooo dearrr, I was off for our zoom Christmas party so didn't attend and I'm very new to the job too! I hope I havnt made a bad impression! 😱

Pipandmum · 15/12/2020 13:12

I think you should attend - it's one hour after all. Try not to think of it as a chore but something that might actually be fun.

LilyLongJohn · 15/12/2020 13:16

It's only an hour, I'd make time and attend

madcatladyforever · 15/12/2020 13:19

Fuck that. If I was drinking, at some point my bum would be on zoom like a full moon.
Its why I dont drink or attend work parties.
