Periods in your 40s....hell?

FortunesFave · 13/12/2020 15:47

I'm 40 bloody eight.

48! That's 35 years worth of periods!

Every month the period arrives like some nasty old Aunt that nobody likes.

Over the past couple of years I get so tired the day before that I have to have a nap in the day. This coincides with me getting tearful.

When it finally arrives it's teasingly light for a day but this feeling of pressure and pain builds up in my lower back and abdomen and hips and I know that by tomorrow, I'll wake up looking like Carrie.

Two days of that then it buggers off. When will it STOP??

Im on the minipill for that very reason!

thegcatsmother · 13/12/2020 16:06

Mine stopped November 2019. I was 53...so about 42 years of periods.

FortunesFave · 13/12/2020 16:07

I've been off the pill for about 15 years....I never liked how it made me feel. There must be something else...I eat well etc...fit...I'm suspicious of hormone laden pills. Was that the doctor's solution MrsT?

41 years for me, I’m done with this shit.

CyberPixie · 13/12/2020 16:11

I feel your pain! I'm so done with them. Wish there was a switch to flick to turn it all off. 43 and perimenopausal.

I recently had a private anti mullerian test done because all the women in my family finished late at 56-58. Thankfully I'm on the lower 25th percentile and mine is likely to finish around 47-49. Can't wait!

Meruem · 13/12/2020 16:15

I actually wrote about this on the menopause board the other day. I’m 51 and still getting them regular as clockwork but god the last couple of years it feels like my insides are being ripped out and I bleed very heavily for about 5 days. Every month now I want to cry when I see its come yet again. Mine show no sign of stopping and not sure how much more I can take.

I did read one positive though. If you have periods for over 40 years you have a 13% higher chance of making it to 90! Also less chance of heart disease or stoke, although it raises breast/cervical cancer risk. Also less chance of dying of covid if you haven’t been through the menopause, apparently.

MrsDThomas · 13/12/2020 16:16

Solution was the minipill. I was sterilised 11 year ago at 35 and my periods were like clockwork and light. Then 3 yrs ago became heavy, passing large clots, the odd day off work and mood swings. Been on and iff iron tablets for the past 30 years. Not peri menopausal so i asked for the minipill and 5 months later i feel good.

Now im on B12 injections too so beginning to feel human.

Aquamarine1029 · 13/12/2020 16:22

It's the hell of peri-menopause, op. HRT is nothing to be "suspicious" of. It is simply a natural hormone supplement replacing what your body needs. HRT is a bloody lifesaver. There is absolutely no need to suffer with this shit.

lljkk · 13/12/2020 16:25

For those browsing... my periods were fine in my 40s. Only getting easier in my 50s, too.

movingonup20 · 13/12/2020 16:25

I was like you 3 days , one day so heavy I didn't want to go far from a toilet. Then I had the mirena fitted and after 7 months they stopped bar a light couple of days (liner s sufficient) I highly recommend

Paranoidmarvin · 13/12/2020 16:26

I’m on the pill. And will be till the doctor insists I come off or they are awful.
I’m peri menopausal and they are not predictable but very light, so I only use panty liners for about 7 days.
But oh my god the pain and aching in my boobs is horrific for three days before hand. So bad I cannot take my bra off.

Paranoidmarvin · 13/12/2020 16:27

It is all crap though. My pill took away my periods for years and year until I was peri menopausal and then it wasn’t enough to stop them entirely anymore.

It really needs to stop now though.

FortunesFave · 13/12/2020 16:35

I thought HRT was something different to the pill? Is it the same thing?

Elieza · 13/12/2020 16:37

I went for acupuncture. Lighter, shorter, more regular periods, roughly 4-5 weeks apart. No pain.

Wish someone had told me years ago.

I had them from 13 to 53 with a few breaks for pregnancies and BFing. They stopped at 53 for 11 months, then came back for 2 more goes. Bastards! No sign of them for the past 2 years though.

Tronkmanton · 13/12/2020 16:49

The mini pill is the answer- changed my life (despite deep scepticism about all things hormonal & bad experiences with the normal pill)

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 13/12/2020 16:53

48 & checking in. I got to 11 months, 2 weeks & 5 days of no periods (Christmas Eve checked on the calendar last year for a 12 month’s free celebration) and it returned in all its glory. I was so disappointed I cried.

Obviously my body wanted to get onto the whole 2020 vibe early.

Bastarding bastard thing.

It’s not as heavy as it was (if anything, it’s eerily light) but I’m currently on the M25 on my way to visit my son & I think my uterus is going to burst from abdomen ala Alien.

And the shits! Oh god the shits. It’s a truly dangerous voyage I’m currently embarking on in the car right now I can tell you.

I take plenty of opiates & neuro distruptive pills for chronic pain...and it’s not touching it.

Hence why I’m distracting myself on here.

HRT not an option (I get stabby with hormone treatments).

That’s all probably TMI but I don’t care. I am old & grumpy. And hoping DH doesn’t stop suddenly as I don’t want to play Knicker Roulette.

AliceMcK · 13/12/2020 16:59

45 and still going. My periods have been hell from day one. I also have big boobs, I get a weeks reprieve each month were they dont hurt or massively swollen. I once weighed them, they were over 2kgs each 😭 as for the pain, my old routine would involve popping pills for at least a week before it arrived, then I could take up to 10 ibuprofen & paracetamol in the first round of pills for the first 48 hours. Now it's not as bad in the lead up, I say led in bed with period pain. But when it arrives, I automatically pop 2 coodamol & 2 naproxen, sometimes I need more to get it under control, I then top up ever 2-3 hours later. Sometimes I can get away with only 24hours of this, but it is usually more like 48 hours.

I've had lectures of Drs so many times about the amount of pain killers I take, I just dont bother telling them now. The only time I was ever taken seriously was when I ended up in hospital with an infected cyst. The consultant couldn't believe I wasn't in pain, they tested my pain threshold and said it was really high, only then did they realise my periods must have been really bad if I was taking so many pain drugs.

I've had lots of investigations since but they dont know why it's so bad for me.

I can't wait for menopause!

I8toys · 13/12/2020 16:59

I'm 48. Periods were getting lighter and shorter. Now the feckers are twice a month.

user1498572889 · 13/12/2020 17:00

I’m 56. Mine have only just stopped. Although I was regular and normal bleeding then they just stopped. Few hot flushes bad finger nails and that’s it. I feel I have got off lightly 🤞

StarlightLady · 13/12/2020 17:05

Early 40s and to sum up, blood, sweat and tears. Sad

AuntyMabelandPippin · 13/12/2020 17:06

HRT. It is bloody marvellous.
