if you're applying for jobs at the moment

You have so much of my sympathy right now.

My career was in a niche within a niche of the large live events industry...I left just before Covid to take a break as I was starting to hate it. It's all I'm officially experienced in and as the whole industry is on pause, even if a job does come up, there are people fighting tooth and nail for it.

I have so many so called "transferable skills" (digital, social media, website management etc) which I've developed alongside my previous jobs but no one is interested, presumably because the employers are inundated with applications from people who already do the role full time. I'm applying for senior stuff down to roles that pay a third of my old salary in some cases.... nothing. My family and partner keep telling me someone will snap me up but I've been looking for months.

I'm so so fucking depressed about it...my confidence in myself is absolutely in the toilet

I’m not surprised your confidence is shot. It is really bloody hard out there at the moment. I was made redundant in the summer and so far have applied for six jobs. I’m lucky in that I will start a new job in the spring (not ideal but better than nothing) but I haven’t heard anything from the others, apart from one saying they were now having a recruitment freeze.

It is brutal out there. I was overqualified for two of the jobs I applied for, and ordinarily should have got an interview for the others, but not a peep. Like you say, I think employers have the pick of applicants at the moment with so many redundancies.

Many of my friends work in events and they are really struggling, so you have my every sympathy, and I hope things improve for you soon.
