Tinned tomatoes. Chopped or whole. Which are the best, in your opinion ?

I've been using Napolina chopped tomatoes for years in things like ragu, pasta sauce and pizza sauce but I'm wondering lately if I'm using the best I can afford ? I've heard good things about Cirio, Cook Italian and M&S own brand. I tried Del Monte once but they were a little anaemic, IYSWIM. I know the packs of four or six tins are slightly better value; I wouldn't want to pay more than £1.00 for a single tin.

Thankyou.

I like Napolina and they’re not that expensive. Also always go with whole, chopped are watery and I tend to have many more end bits imo

grassisjeweled · 12/12/2020 18:31

Passata is better

Kpo58 · 12/12/2020 18:31

Waitrose own brand chopped tomatoes are really nice.

I don't like whole tomatoes due to the look and texture of them.

Indeed. Like peeled testicles.

(Sorry Blush)

Mutti finely chopped are fantastic and no end bits! I prefer them to Napolina, which I used to use.

CaraDuneRedux · 12/12/2020 18:34

@grassisjeweled

Passata is better
Yup!
Fennelandlovage · 12/12/2020 18:35

Switched to whole as much richer and less watered down.

ShivD · 12/12/2020 18:35

Always whole peeled as they use better quality tomatoes for these (according to some TV chef!).

I used to love the Waitrose essential ones, great quality and price but they’re not really on Ocado anymore!

VaggieMight · 12/12/2020 18:36

Chopped Napolina, most cheaper brands are too watery. I only like whole ones on toast.

Caspianberg · 12/12/2020 18:36

I use cirio passata.

ShivD · 12/12/2020 18:36

Cool were on offer recently and I really like them.

ShivD · 12/12/2020 18:36

*cook

ShivD · 12/12/2020 18:37

While tomatoes break down as they cook so they don’t stay that way!!!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 12/12/2020 18:38

I KNEW they reminded me of something! That's the one, thank you.

peridito · 12/12/2020 18:42

Just googled Mutti as I'd not heard of them and found that they and Ciro had v v poor labour conditions some years ago .

? improved now ?

OhLittleBoreOfWhabylon · 12/12/2020 18:46

Oh no, @peridito! They are the best chopped tomatoes I've ever found!

AnnaMagnani · 12/12/2020 18:50

I honestly can't say I've ever noticed a difference in taste between different brands but

  1. I think the whole ones look revolting and

  2. I don't want my tomatoes picked by people in slave labour type conditions. So Cirio is out.

OhLittleBoreOfWhabylon · 12/12/2020 18:50

Ah, looks like that report shook them up

This x 10.
IHaveBrilloHair · 12/12/2020 18:52

I use whole, chopped and passata, they have different uses.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 12/12/2020 18:53

Either chopped or passatta. I am also an Aldi girl Blush.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 12/12/2020 18:53

Passata.

EddieBananas · 12/12/2020 18:57

I use whole. I think Jamie Oliver said they were better quality than chopped. Mind you, Waitrose Essentials is good for both!

AlwaysCheddar · 12/12/2020 18:59

I read that whole tomatoes are a better grade than chopped, so never buy chopped and purée or mash them.

WildRosie · 12/12/2020 19:02

Thanks everyone. I once tried using passata as a pizza sauce but it was way too runny. Reducing it in a saucepan helped but made the flavour so concentrated it was unpleasant! I'll stick to tinned tomatoes.
