What doesn't kill you makes you stronger and other wanktastic sayings

Just thinking about my Mum & Dad. In their seventies, been stuck on their own for nearly 9 months. I am in Australia, so no hope of seeing them soon.

My mum's cousin is in hospital - end of life care. He is alone, in horrific pain, scared, running the covid gauntlet. His wife is equally terrifed and alone in Tier 3. They have been married for 52 years and separated now when they need each other most.

Then that bloody awful saying popped into my head and it made me feel uncharacteristically pissed off. It might not kill us but it is NOT going to make us stronger.

I loathe this saying.

"now more than ever"

SmallBalloonAnimals · 12/12/2020 04:23

Any of those fb quotes that talk about how wonderful your mother is...

Sparklingbrook · 12/12/2020 05:05

'It's ok to not be ok'. Helpful. Hmm

Anything to do with 'fighting'.

Today Barbara Windsor lost her fight with Alzheimer's.

No. She was ill and died. She didn't 'lose'.

Unhelpful language.

I think that is helpful at times, if you are trying hard to be strong and feeling guilty about failing. But yes, I can see how it can also be rubbish.
wellthatsunusual · 12/12/2020 05:13

Anything like #bekind.

I mean yes, I'm not denying it's good to be considerate of others, of course it is. But it's the way the statement is used to guilt trip people into accepting terrible behaviour from others because we should just be kind to them. Friend being a massive user and draining you emotionally as well? Just be kind. Living next door to the neighbour from hell? Just be kind.

JessWild · 12/12/2020 05:13

"Cheer up it might never happen" seriously eff off.

It's usually said by people who never stick up for anything or anyone
Sparklingbrook · 12/12/2020 05:16

@whichwallywhere I just think it is meaningless really.

I would reply with it just did !

Be kind is a load of shit

whichwallywhere · 12/12/2020 05:17
@whichwallywhere I just think it is meaningless really.
So did I for years and it nearly always is but once, just once, it actually was useful Shock

Sparklingbrook · 12/12/2020 05:17

'In a world where you can be anything be kind'

whichwallywhere · 12/12/2020 05:19

@Sparklingbrook

'In a world where you can be anything be kind'
Grabs bucket.
NiceGerbil · 12/12/2020 05:20

In general

Platitudes are useless.

And just a thing to say when something is bad so the person saying it can feel like they've said something.

Yes, that one's just plain sick.
slipperywhensparticus · 12/12/2020 05:41

Yup #bekind has to be the most overused pile of wank ever this year along with we are "all in this together"

No boris we are not its cold im struggling your doctor does house calls MINE barely does video calls your heat is on and you have a lovely warm home we do not im lucky to have a housing association home and im lucky to be a carer I suppose because I get a whole £10 bonus each year plus the obligatory warning about "if you get more than one Christmas bonus you must tell us you WILL be expected to pay it back" Hmm

HungryForSnacks · 12/12/2020 05:46

In Wales it's "There we are then" Which means exactly the same thing.

This drives me mad, absolutely mad. The implication that if they just fought harder they would win - horrible.
BullshitVivienne · 12/12/2020 06:43

This too shall pass.

Very popular on the Sleep boards here. Technically correct but how is that going to help me at 4am when the baby has been awake for 3 hours?

cheesersqueezer · 12/12/2020 06:49

What’s for you, won't go by you.
Nonsense

OffredOfjune · 12/12/2020 06:52

Oh MIL is awful for putting these sort of shite things on FB. The worse has got to be, 'Instead of waiting for the storm to pass, learn to dance in the rain.' Hmm In other words, if you're going through a really shit time, tough - learn to just get on with it. Very helpful.
