What doesn't kill you makes you stronger and other wanktastic sayings

Just thinking about my Mum & Dad. In their seventies, been stuck on their own for nearly 9 months. I am in Australia, so no hope of seeing them soon.

My mum's cousin is in hospital - end of life care. He is alone, in horrific pain, scared, running the covid gauntlet. His wife is equally terrifed and alone in Tier 3. They have been married for 52 years and separated now when they need each other most.

Then that bloody awful saying popped into my head and it made me feel uncharacteristically pissed off. It might not kill us but it is NOT going to make us stronger.

I loathe this saying.

My other sister says ‘in a hundred years, who will give a toss’

'You only regret the things you didn't do'

@ThatIsNotMyUsername

When god shuts a door he opens a window God never gives you more than you can handle

No and no.

Then god can pay the heating bill Grin

“Stiff upper lip”
“Least said soonest mended”
“You’ll be fine”
“You’ve got this”

All said to shut down discussion where person can’t be arsed talking about it. Or to deny there is a problem.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 12/12/2020 09:13

No issues with me, I’m part polar bear (mum had the windows open all year ‘for fresh air’)!

BiscuitDrama · 12/12/2020 09:15

I’m another that doesn’t mind ‘it is what it is’. I use it as a ‘this is what we’ve got, there’s no point in endlessly analysing what we could have done differently or how we’ve got here, let’s just get on and do what, if anything, we can about it’.

FearlessGreatExpanse · 12/12/2020 09:16

Amd to expand on what @ThatIsNotMyUsername said, a homeless guy my friend and I once had a lovely chat with said

“Fuck them all, except a few but if they piss you off, fuck them too”

Sound advice.

winechateauxjoy · 12/12/2020 09:18

The but for the grace of God go I.

I hate this phrase. It's patronising - implies that I am better than the other person. Or, it implies that God allowed that other person to be worst off, whilst protecting me. Horrible.

winechateauxjoy · 12/12/2020 09:19

There but for the grace of God!

"If you've got nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all"
I've had no problem telling someone to piss off so far?
Especially my ex!

I've just seen the worst one yet, there are no words.

It has a core of truth. I married my abusive exH a naive shy (timid) teenager. 8 years later, after trying for years to break me (almost succeeded) I found a strength I never knew I had and kicked him out. I now take shit from no one, I fight the corner of friends when they need help, I stand up to bullying colleagues and have a lovely DH who appreciates me. If I'd married a decent man who cared for me, I'm sure I would still be the person shoved out of the way in a supermarket queue.

FearlessGreatExpanse · 12/12/2020 09:33

@whichwallywhere

Nauseating- according to Bryon Katie’s wiki page she is “a spiritual innovator for the 21st century”

I tend to agree. I note that somebody has put their name to those bons mots. “Byron Katie”. I’m seeing an irritating teenage girl with a random platitude generator.

TerrifiedandWorried · 12/12/2020 09:34

@OrigamiPenguinArmy I love this Terry Pratchett quote:

"If you trust in yourself. . .and believe in your dreams. . .and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy."

MadamShazam · 12/12/2020 09:38

I detest the whole #bekind movement. Because most of us go around being cunts all the time 🙄

#BeKind

Usually said by people who have shown unkindness or those who are selectively kind on the virtual signally front

Summerstorms · 12/12/2020 09:45

"Time heals all wounds"

Does it fuck

User9574 · 12/12/2020 10:19

It is what it is.

No that is tautological.

tectonicplates · 12/12/2020 12:01

Re "It's okay not to be okay", I do find this useful because it's made to counteract the "pull your socks up" people. Many of us have parents who "don't believe in" mental health stuff or think it shouldn't be talked about. Relatively speaking it's a very modern thing for people and society as a whole to talk about mental health at all.

MoreKnackeredThanYou · 12/12/2020 12:09

Agree with ‘everything happens for a reason’......does it though? Really? Are people killed and maimed in wars ‘for a reason’? Do people go through their lives with horrific mental health problems ‘for a reason’? Are children bullied ‘for a reason?’ It’s the lack of consistency that bothers me - people apply it to situations that they think fit, but ignore ones that don’t.

whichwallywhere · 12/12/2020 12:39

I think there is a reason for everything but often it's an unpalatable reason.

I like it - it just gave me this gem: Organisational culture is always a pleasure. Grin

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 12/12/2020 12:45

One that pisses me off no end is not because its wanky, but because it is so bloody true it hurts.

When a man says no, that's the end of the conversation. When a woman says no, its the beginning of a negotiation.
