What doesn't kill you makes you stronger and other wanktastic sayings

Just thinking about my Mum & Dad. In their seventies, been stuck on their own for nearly 9 months. I am in Australia, so no hope of seeing them soon.

My mum's cousin is in hospital - end of life care. He is alone, in horrific pain, scared, running the covid gauntlet. His wife is equally terrifed and alone in Tier 3. They have been married for 52 years and separated now when they need each other most.

Then that bloody awful saying popped into my head and it made me feel uncharacteristically pissed off. It might not kill us but it is NOT going to make us stronger.

I loathe this saying.

My particular FB bugbear is ‘my door is always open’
Except the friends who post this the most are the ones who never check in on you in real life!

Someone said to me, "it could be worse" I was in a shop, a bit tearful.

They got the full, "My friend's father, a lovely man, has been missing for 2 days. A body has just been found. either the lovely man I now is dead or he is still missing and another family have lost someone"

whichwallywhere · 12/12/2020 13:27

Somebody said it to me after my Mum died. I asked them to explain how it could be worse, oddly enough they couldn't answer. They knew she had died as well.

And anyway, people on Mumsnet don't even answer the door unless they're expecting someone 😂

'There's always someone worse off'
'Worse things happen at sea'

Ok then. Silly me Hmm

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 12/12/2020 13:43

Ah now we love a bit of ‘worse things happen at sea’ as we always try to work out what thy at could be. Shark attack or giant octopus? Raft of the Medusa?

WednesdayAllTheWay · 12/12/2020 13:45

"It wasn't meant to be"

Shorthand for "I can't be bothered listening to you be upset"

BreadSaucery · 12/12/2020 13:46

‘This too shall pass’ annoys me, because the whole point of it as a philosophy is that you apply it to the good and happy times in your life as well as the bad. You’re supposed to adopt an equilibrium about everything, not just the shit things.

I've always imagined sinking titanic style, or a full on pirate attack.
Hardbackwriter · 12/12/2020 13:54

That awful 'If you can't handle me at my worst you don't deserve me at my best' quote. An excuse to treat people badly and always posted by people whose best isn't worth crossing the room for, let alone enduring anything worse.

As I have a shark phobia I agree with worse things happen at sea. It does take a dick to say it though.

It was meant to be

It wasn't meant to be

That which doesn't kill you makes you stronger

All things must pass

This too shall pass

Fall down seven times, get up eight times

All of a sudden my Facebook feed is full of this wankery.
You can alway generate your own meaningful phrase here

nonsense.x2d.org/
I tried that and it came up with
"Stupidity revels in authority"
Never a truer word randomly generated.

wheresmyhairytoe · 12/12/2020 17:37

"Try to stay positive"

Said to me in the middle of a mental breakdown, when I couldn't even get out of bed.

Fuck off. I know I've lots to be grateful for and positive things around me but I'm afraid my brain won't let me focus on them and you pointing it out actually makes me feel guilty and even worse.

The universe has your back
Karma's a bitch

Karma is a load of bull. Of course behave kindly and unselfishly but unfortunately bad things happen to good people, sometimes on repeat. And good things happen to bad people, sometimes on repeat

The universe has your back is usually spoken by deluded pseudo spiritual types or local yummy mummies with millionaire husband's. Both sayings reek of privilege.

Happiness is home made is another utterly bullshit and invalidating statement.

"God tempers the wind to the shorn lamb" was one that used to set DM off. Patent bollocks, especially if you're brought up in the West Yorkshire cloth trade.

I’ve always preferred this version; If life gives you lemons make apple juice. Then sit back and watch while everyone tries to figure out how you did it.

I use it is what it is. Usually it means everything’s shit and I can’t change that so gotta figure a way to deal.

Penners99 · 13/12/2020 09:10

When someone says;

“Sticks and stones may break your bones”

I try to reply with “But whips and chains excite me”

I do get some weird looks.....
