Decanters... pretentious?

What's your thoughts?

I have a lovely little crystal one I bought for peanuts on an antique market. I've never used it but am tempted to, just for over Christmas

Is that a bit OTT?

Not at all! Some wines need to be decanted.

HighHeelBoots · 11/12/2020 17:00

I love a decanter and I'm proper working classGrin
I have a lovely, quirky vintage decanter for Jack Daniels, a traditional sherry decanter and a small, red decanter for port. They all have the appropriate glasses

WisestIsShe · 11/12/2020 17:01

Use it! What's the point in owning it if you never use it? I think it sounds lovely.

edwinbear · 11/12/2020 17:03

If you can't use it at Christmas, when can you?!

Submariner · 11/12/2020 17:05

I don't have a decanter (although I'd use it if I did) but I have loads of pointless kitchen items. Why would I use one of my many many pretty teapots when I could just make a cup of tea in a mug? A bit of ceremony adds something lovely to food and drink that makes it more special. (Herein ends your daily load of old wank Grin)

Took me a while to work out how you bought it "for peanuts" but are plnning to use it for wine GrinIt's been a long week!

Totally OTT but I love mine. Enjoy using yours.

tsmainsqueeze · 11/12/2020 17:59

I think that sounds lovely , its been so miserable of late i think we should do whatever we want to bring some cheer and a smile into our lives .

DelphineWalsh · 11/12/2020 18:02

Absolutely OTT but fabulous. I have several in the drinks cupboard with the homemade spirits in.

MrsEricBana · 11/12/2020 18:06

Put peanuts in it, then it will look ironic and you will look cool.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 11/12/2020 18:06

DH has an extensive collection and several are always in use for whisky and port. One even has a piano board.

They live on top of the bar with his homebrew kegs (wine and beer) and his optics.

We probably sound like alcoholics now.

MrsEricBana · 11/12/2020 18:06

(Or just use it for port or whatever, it's not pretentious!)

I was just thinking I should fill it with peanuts and post a pic.... 😂

Definitely!

Oh please do OP!

Cam2020 · 11/12/2020 18:13

Beautiful! Do it!

AnyFucker · 11/12/2020 18:15

I have 3 cut glass decanters gifted by my beloved (deceased) MIL

I don't "keep them for best". They are displayed with pride in my sitting room. One for sherry or port, one for brandy and one for wine.

dontgobaconmyheart · 11/12/2020 18:16

I don't think it's 'pretentious' or posh, not that it actually matters. Why have/keep one if it isn't going to be used for the intended purpose after all! Go for it.

I agree. Hence my collection of cream jugs, sugar bowls, milk jugs, coffee pots, cake stands... Grin
muddyford · 11/12/2020 18:32

My DH was an officer in the armed forces so decanters always remind me of happily riotous mess dinners. Go for it!

FlibbertyGiblets · 11/12/2020 18:35

googles piano board

What is a piano board please? Have googled and none the wiser.

OP I'm loving the peanut decanter idea!
