What’s it like being an Electrian?

I’m thinking of making a mid life career change (currently a teacher) I’ve been researching becoming a self employed Electrian or a heating engineer. I’m aware I’d have to do training etc.
Does anyone have any advice on what the job is like day to day? E.g Can you be flexible with your hours? Is the pay ok? Would I physically be able to do it (average strength woman)?
Is there enough work around? Is a different trade a better idea?
Thanks!

Shocking.

I'll get my coat and leave someone else to answer you sensibly. Grin

My husband is one.

He's constantly stressed.
His back is always in pain because of how manual it all is (here's me thinking he wired plugs all day)
He says its a constant battle with other trademen trying to get work done on site. So the joiners will come in and plasterboard walls that he has to raggle or the decorators will start painting the ceilings when he hasn't finished the lights. Thats mainly down to who is running the site but its clear they don't give a shit.

He's worked both self employed and employed and it's never any different.

Pay wise, its average £13/£14 per hour. When we 1st met, before the 2007 recession he was easily on £20+ per hour. Oh and speaking of recession, he's constantly worried about losing his job.

So, sorry but I don't have much positive to say about being an electrician from an outsider point of view. Its the one thing we argue about the most as he's so miserable.
