What's the secret to successfully shortening trousers?

I've been looking for high waisted, navy, wide leg trousers for ages. Tried so many in all price ranges, never quite right.

I've just received a beautiful pair, usually out of my price range but half price in the sale. Lovely fabric, fit perfectly on waist and hips but they're about 9 in too long.

I can sew a hem, but am usually not happy with how it sits, there's usually some bunching, what's the secret?

As an aside, who are these trousers for? I'm 5'7" and trousers, especially flowy ones, are almost always too long.

If you have bunching it sounds like you may not have ironed the folds in before sewing or you are pulling the stitches too tight. Might either of these be the case?

If they are expensive I wouldn't attempt it myself. Some laundrettes offer a clothes alteration/repair service. Not sure about availability during Covid. 9 inches too long will involve cutting. No unless you're confident I wouldn't attempt it. Ruined a couple of skirts myself.

9 inches?!

Take them to the dry cleaner and let them do it.

Yes, I'd take to the dry cleaners but get a recommendation, I've had clothes butchered by my local one before!

If the trouser is even slightly flared or tapered at the bottom you will find that turning up a new hem means you're trying to match two different lengths of fabric, and this will lead to bunching. With wide legs you want a reasonably deep hem (an inch or so) which will make it tricky if the leg is not completely straight.
