Any trouble with etsy paying crafters?

MerinoFroggie · 10/12/2020 12:22

I put in an online order on the etsy website from a crafter that is based within my home country. I checked him out on other platforms like Facebook and he has a presence on other platforms.

I got a message this morning, saying that he made sales over 400 euro this week but etsy are only giving him 70 from all the sales.

Does that happen on etsy? Is that how it really works?

The crafter goes on to say, can I seek a refund from etsy and contact him on another one of the platforms he uses.

Something doesn't really add up here for me.
I would imagine etsy would be very slow to refund or I would be waiting a number of days and even up to a month. It was a purchase over 100 euro, so I don't have the money to put in a new order on another site and wait for a refund from etsy.

Does this sound dodgy from the crafter?

I found some of these regrets but in pieces and sell on as hand made

Or they have their own site which is cheaper

If you use google app - use a photo of the product and you’ll see if it’s really a bargain!

Doesn’t help now though

PandemicPalava · 10/12/2020 12:25

I thought Etsy just took a percentage at point of sale, and it sounds like he doesn't want to pay it. It's only 5% though I think

Donotlikemyname · 10/12/2020 12:28

He might be trying to bypass the Etsy fees, which are about 13%. I sell on Etsy and I wouldn't suggest it, but I will direct a buyer to my website if they ask.

I would look at his feedback, maybe agree to pay through Paypal which is 3% of sales for you, but you have some buyer protection.

MerinoFroggie · 10/12/2020 12:35

Something is not adding up with the sums he gave me so. If etsy is taking 5% of sales, his message claims so much more is taken away from him.

I tried to seek a refund from etsy but etsy is not allowing it yet until the end of the delivery time frame and that's the 25th of December or after.

This is disappointing because its supposed to be a Xmas gift

I got in touch with the crafter and looks like he wants me to go through his website to put in another order.

It's coming across as dodgy to me to be quite honest.

Etsy do take a fair whack from sales (and postage too) but they don’t like sellers trying to promote other buying routes to customers.
It’s possible he has listed items and owes Etsy from that, but he doesn’t sound very trustworthy tbh. I wouldn’t buy from someone so insistent that I shouldn’t use the selling platform I have found them on and attempted to purchase from.

MerinoFroggie · 10/12/2020 13:04

The sums he gave me doesn't add up to what's stated here on etsy charges.

13% here and 5% there

I did the sums and my order was 105 euro including delivery. With 13% and 5% taken away it brings it down to 82 euro.

The man said he's only getting 70 from sales of over 400 this week.

It looks like a massive pack of sh1t. I was really hoping this would be a Christmas gift and I really don't need this sh1t in my life to be caught up between a crafter and a selling platform.

I don't have the money to place a new order and also that request alone is dodge as fcuk and screams to me to stop.

Ferrylass · 10/12/2020 13:15

I'd cancel the order and get a refund. I sell on Etsy and it's approx 5% they take.
Those figures he's giving you are nonsense, I'd avoid!!

MerinoFroggie · 10/12/2020 13:17

This is very weird.

I checked the crafters Facebook and website. His online shop all goes to the etsy website. He has no other online shop or other selling platform.

Etsy now seems to have removed the shop too. I requested a refund from the crafter so hopefully he will get back to me by the end of the day and give me the refund.

Personally, I’d continue with the order through Etsy, refuse to engage with any more requests to buy away from the platform and report if any further problems.
Sellers really shouldn’t be doing this, it reflects on the integrity of all Etsy sellers if customers are pissed about and annoyed. Yes, Etsy fees are pretty outrageous, but that isn’t the fault of the customers and no one is forcing a seller to sell on there.

MerinoFroggie · 10/12/2020 13:20

Hopefully he will get back to me within the next hour or two with a refund.

I sent a message to ask to cancel the order and for a refund. Isn't the next turn now his?

Is there any other way of contacting etsy about an order? Im getting a message saying that I need to wait for the delivery date to pass.

BreadSaucery · 10/12/2020 13:22

X-post.
He probably wanted to arrange a PayPal sale via Pm on FB.
Hope you get your refund from Etsy, what a pain in the arse when you thought you’d found a gift!

onetwothreeadventure · 10/12/2020 13:34

He's probably just trying to avoid etsy fees by directing you to his personal site where he doesn't pay commission. If you have trouble getting a refund then raise it with etsy as it would definitely be against their terms.

MerinoFroggie · 10/12/2020 13:48

Is there any way of getting in touch with etsy to open a complaint or to open a dispute.

I asked for a refund from the seller and it looks like he's giving me the runaround with it saying he ordered the parts for the order.

At this stage I definitely want to cancel the order and get a refund, full stop. Surely when crafters sign up to sell, they are aware of the charges?

I should have know it was too good to be true. There was percent off from 130 euro down to 100 and also including was a free pen.

Looks to me as if he only contacted me in the hope of another payment through PayPal and I probably won't ever get the order.

OP posts:
MerinoFroggie · 10/12/2020 13:51

He doesn't have any other online shop. He's probably hoping I will give up another payment through PayPal and maybe even on the PayPal friend option or something. That's what it looks like to me.

Apparently according to him, he was able to sort out peoples orders and refunds for others but I'm the only order that he wasn't able to refund.

OP posts:
MerinoFroggie · 10/12/2020 14:06

What happens when you request to cancel an order and ask for a refund from a seller?

Do they have to refund you?

Especially in a case like this in this because the item was never dispatched?

Or is it etsy that refunds.

The crafter is claiming he's not able to refund me and that the system won't let him refund me. He wrote he was able to refund others but my order is the only order he's not able to refund.

Highly dodgy at this stage.

We can say shit and fuck on here Grin

OuiOuiKitty · 10/12/2020 14:16

@Ferrylass

I'd cancel the order and get a refund. I sell on Etsy and it's approx 5% they take. Those figures he's giving you are nonsense, I'd avoid!!
You really need to do the sums properly and make sure you are getting your margins right. Etsy fees are closer to 13% all in not 5%. OP he should be able to refund you. I would contact etay at this stage, he is not being truthful.
OuiOuiKitty · 10/12/2020 14:19

If you didn't want to contact etsy straight away then you could message him and say look if you don't refund I will send a copy of your messages to etsy. Its against the t&Cs to get people to pay through a way which isn't esty so at the very least he would get a warning from etsy for his behaviour, worst case they could close his shop.

psychomath · 10/12/2020 14:32

Yeah I think you're right OP - sounds like he's trying to get you to send money outside of the official site so that you won't be able to open a dispute through Etsy if you don't receive the item. Even if it's not a scam it's very unprofessional - he should have calculated the fees beforehand and factored that into his pricing instead of messing you around after you'd already paid. Def avoid!

MerinoFroggie · 10/12/2020 14:32

His etsy shop seems to be down now so it does look like another person reported him or etsy removed his shop for breaking T&Cs.

Contacting etsy is a bloody nightmare. It keeps directing me to contact the seller. I'm not able to open a dispute case until after the estimated delivery date has passed which is December the 25th.

OP posts:
MerinoFroggie · 10/12/2020 15:34

What do I do now?

I asked the seller to cancel the order and for a refund (because the situation doesn't sit right with me. How he wants me to cancel with etsy and pay him through PayPal. Its all just dodgy).

He's just after getting back to me saying he sorted every with etsy and he's just after getting the full payment from etsy and its all good now.

At this stage I want a refund full stop. I don't want to be waiting around for an item that may or may not come, and more than likely it's not going to come. He probably realised he's not going to get a PayPal payment from me and he might as well try and run with whatever etsy is going to give him.

It's all dodgy. Do I continue with the cancellation of the order or do I accept things as they are now?
