Hi has anyone else gone through this my baby is nearly 5 months old and since she turned 3.5 months old I have been losing at least 400 strands of hair per day I’m so scared of washing & brushing my hair because that much falls out my hair has also thinned out so so much before I got pregnant I had really thick long hair past my waist but since having my daughter it’s just got so bad I went to the doctors go blood drawn checked for thyroid and my iron levels everything come back normal so I’m just putting it down to postpartum hair loss? When does this end ? At this rate I’ll have no hair left on my head it’s so depressing I’m also using biotin shampoo & conditioner and I take prenatal vitamins

Yes it's fairly standard. During pregnancy you don't lose so much hair, so now your head is making up for it.

HarryHarryHarry · 09/12/2020 20:29

It’s normal. Wait till it starts growing back and you have a halo of fuzzy baby hair all round your hairline! My youngest is 1 and my hair is just starting to look OK again!

Sweetpea1989 · 09/12/2020 20:31

I feel your pain, mine is six months old and it’s showing no sign of slowing

Yup normal but terrible and scary. My youngest is 2.5 and mine stopped coming out in heaps about a year ago and looks back to normal now. Try not to panic, it will stop eventually.

Loiis12345 · 10/12/2020 21:29

I never new this was a thing I have always had thick long hair past my waist and each day it’s getting thinner and thinner 😫 I really hope it slows down soon as it’s so depressing Sweetpea1989 when did your hair shedding start ?

Like everyone else said. It's normal. Your hair gets thicker in pregnancy so when baby is born it's starts falling out again. Mine started about 2 months after giving birth, it went really thin and horrible. My baby is now 9 months and it's just started to calm down and look thicker again

Babyfg · 10/12/2020 22:06

My baby is five months old and I'm sure I've shed enough hair I could knit a jumper with it 🤣 I found a good hair cut (several inches) has helped a bit but there's still loads!

Sweetpea1989 · 11/12/2020 17:00

@Loiis12345 I reckon it started about a month after she was born? I’m hoping it’s slowing down now, my plug holes will be chocka at this rate!

Loiis12345 · 11/12/2020 18:00

@sweetpea1989 yes I’m hoping mine slows down soon can’t believe how thin my hair has actually gone has yours gone any thinner ?

I see people always suggest getting Ferratin (?) Levels checked, I think they're different to big standard iron? But yes it will slow down, mine is still going at 15 months but my DS feeds non stop still

IsFinnRogersDead · 11/12/2020 18:13

My friend called it "three month mange"
I still had it at 5 months post partum.

Ginfilledcats · 11/12/2020 18:18

I gave incredibly thick hair and started losing what felt like half my head about 8 weeks after. She's 6m now and it's eased off considerably x

Loiis12345 · 11/12/2020 18:27

Hopefully it stops soon then 🙂 I hope anyway lol I have had bloods drawn and everything came back normal yes I’ve heard alott of people say there’s slowed down at 6 months x

doingitforthefrill · 11/12/2020 18:48

Yes I lost a lot of hair after having both my children. I already had fairly thin hair so it was so depressing to see the amount that was coming out, I had bald patches at the front of my hair line. I think it slowed down around 6 months and by a year it was growing back and wasn’t coming out as much! It’s horrible, but completely normal and will get better.

dementedpixie · 11/12/2020 18:52

When you're pregnant your hair gets stuck in a growth phase and you don't lose as much. After birth you lose all the excess hair so its perfectly normal

Dizzy1234 · 11/12/2020 18:58

Try taking Biotin from Holland and Barrett 5000 mg daily, check you can take them if you're BF.
I'm menapausal and losing loads of hair to the point it looks like it's receding. I also use Plantar 39 hair tonic every night on my roots and my hair is thickening and I have baby hair growing where it was receding

Loiis12345 · 11/12/2020 19:25

@Dizzy1234I’ll try that I am taken vitamins with biotin in but been on the for 5 weeks now and not noticed any change so I’m gonna pop out over the weekend and grab some different ones x

Once I stopped breastfeeding at 5 months I shed so much hair I had bald patches at the sides of my hair and new hair started growing when baby was about 9 months

Loiis12345 · 11/12/2020 19:44

@pringlebells I have got bald patches at the side of my temples and the mount of strands that fall out everyday / all day 🤦🏻‍♀️ Is a joke ! I’m glad yours has calmed down now x

Normal hair loss is regulated by your immune system. When pregnant your immune system is dampened (so you don't reject the baby in your body) which means you largely stop losing hair. After having your baby the immune system goes back to normal and you quite quickly lose the hair that you should have she'd during your pregnancy. Although I think some women lose more, some less.

Jayaywhynot · 11/12/2020 20:01

@Loiis12345
I tried multi vitamins with Biotin in, they did nothing, ask the staff in Holland and Barrett about Biotin, plus they are currently on offer, bottle of 50 £12.99 buy one get one half price

Loiis12345 · 11/12/2020 20:03

@Jayaywhynot thank you I’ll go there tomorrow and grab some x

Yes to the bald patches on the sides. There is hair everywhere at the moment and I'm constantly wiping/plucking/vacuuming it up! DS is 8m and it started about 6.5m and really picked up. Now starting to ease off. With DD I used the kerastase long and strong serum on the baby hairs when they started to grow to keep them healthy and strong while they grew out which helped as my hair is quite fine.
Good luck and invest in some hair bands, a cheap toothbrush and some hot spray to tame the baby hairs when they start growing in!

spottygymbag · 11/12/2020 21:28

*hair spray. Not hot spray!

EmilySpinach · 11/12/2020 21:33

I am going to disagree with the majority and suggest that if you have large bald patches then you should get your thyroid checked.
