How many fairy lights do you put on your 6 foot tree?

I have a 6.5 foot tree. Is 200 lights and 100 baubles enough? Or should I put in an extra 300 lights.

@ramblingsonthego your tree is gorgeous s. Do you mind me asking where you got it?
I bought a £50, 6ft tree from M&S this year that looked nicer on the ad than it does in person. I'd love one like yours.

@msssm it was from a local garden centre about 9 or so years ago. Although they still sell the same ones now. It was about £90 for a 6 foot one. I have to have a very very full looking tree. I can't stand the ones when you can see through the branches so I hate most of the ones in the shops! Try an upmarket garden centre and I am sure they will have a similar if not the same one (I'm sure they all get the stuff from the same places!)

@Peridotty

How do you drape the lights so you can’t see the string between tiers and branches?
If you've got enough lights,or separate strings, you can put some on the inner part ie near the trunk first. It's effective and no visible flex.

With the rest, if the flex is tree coloured it's not that noticeable with all the lights and decorations there, especially if you creatively hide it behind decorations.

However many lights came on the pre-lit artificial tree. I like a tree but I fucking hate putting the lights on, so I bought a prelit tree.

We have maybe 60-80 baubles and I get bored putting that many on and the cats knock them off anyway think that's plenty. Less is more and all that.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 09/12/2020 21:43

There are different ways to string lights on a tree, I think you are just winding it round the outer layer.

My tree is a Balsam Hill spruce so each layer of branches is lowered down and fluffed and then I start the led lighting cable at the back of the tree from the plug end. I start at the trunk and I go up the main branch tucking the lights under the smaller branches and then when I get to the end of the branch I go up and down the ends of that branch before coming back down and moving onto the branch next to it. So each branch splits into 2 or 3 "hands" at the end, I go up and down each hand before coming back down the branch to the trunk.

I have 900 lights on a 6ft tree. You can also just wrap the lights about half way between the ends of the branches and the trunk and also the outer part of the tree. It gives more depth to the lights as they are within the tree.

7ft tree and 240 here! I don’t feel the need for anymore but my tree is also flocked so makes it look quite bright anyway?

cookiemonster5 · 09/12/2020 21:47

I've a 7tf with 1200 lights on. Love loads of lights

fastandthecurious · 09/12/2020 21:48

Ours is pre lit but before that we had a 7ft with 1000 lights on

MrsFezziwig · 09/12/2020 21:52

I have 300. I’ve thought of having more, but I also have tinsel and a fair few personal baubles which I like to be able to see properly.

It’s immaterial this year anyway as when I went a couple of days ago to investigate buying more, the fairy light shelves looked as though a plague of locusts had been through! Scarcely any left at all, and no warm white which I prefer to cool white.

loutypips · 09/12/2020 21:53

I have 1500 lights. Supposed to be for a 7ft tree but the 1000 one was out of stock. It looks lovely.

tinselfest · 09/12/2020 22:01

Less is more in my view. We have a 6'6" artificial tree, and there two different sets of 200 lights on it. Usually we have one white and the other set coloured, but we've gone for all white lights this year to go with the green / white / silver theme.

It is a relatively slim tree though. Maybe if it was as wide as it is tall, we'd need more.

20viona · 09/12/2020 22:01

750

speakout · 09/12/2020 22:04

7ft tree and 250 lights. I like understated.

ineedcoffeecoffeecoffee · 09/12/2020 22:09

I’ve got a 6 1/2 ft tree with 1000 compact led lights. I think I could have gone for 2000 though as i had to make them stretch at the end. I read roughly 100 lights per foot. I love the compact lights though.

AlwaysLatte · 09/12/2020 22:29

We usually have a 7ft tree and have always had 3 lights strings with 200 each. Any more per string and they're hard to manage. This year my son wanted coloured lights 😬 so we compromised and bought LED coloured lights with a remote control - zap it to warm white when he's gone to bed 😀

HowayPet · 09/12/2020 23:26

The general rule of the thumb is 100 lights per foot of tree.

We have 2, 7ft trees. Living room one has 1200 (warm white). Kitchen has 600 (Coloured) And could probably do with a few more but I do like lots of lights.

Re baubles/decorations depends on whether your happy once decorated.
I have loads on living room tree never actually counted but at a guess I’d say 300 + But doesn’t look overloaded

Other tree again never counted but not anywhere near as many As living room but still feel there’s something missing, Both trees (Artificial) are wide and bushy so can take a lot of decorations.

Peridotty · 10/12/2020 00:05

Some really lovely trees here!!
I feel like my tree has a lot to live up to now!! These are the 200 lights on my 6 foot tree. I feel like it’s not THAT terrible is it?
I’m definitely adding an extra 300 lights though.

1000 led warm white lights on my 6ft tree. I didn’t realise they were cluster style when I bought them so not the look I was expecting but I think it’s enough lights!

Having read the thread I have ordered a set of 1000 warm white lights. Now to cajole DH for a trip to the Xmas tree farm this weekend🎄

Crankley · 10/12/2020 00:39

I have neither tree nor lights.

Of all the photographs, I prefer those with just white lights and am really not a fan of the multicoloured look.

RatherLostPenguinsOnParade · 10/12/2020 00:50

We have 300 on a 6ft tree and it's perfect for us. Too many lights can set off migraines for me, especially if they're coloured and flashing so solid white ones for us and none elsewhere, walking past all the lit up houses is bad enough for me without ours looking like that too. Definitely doesn't look lacking on our tree though, we have tinsel, beads and baubles all over too. We wind them round loosely then run the remaining lights up and down the tree at the front which I think fills in gaps better too.

I think coloured ones always look like they need more though and if you have them flashing or twinkling they would need more I'd think.
