How much do you pay for Gas & Electricity?

Anonymouscat20 · 09/12/2020 16:52

Sorry if that seems like a cheeky question to ask how much everyone pays. Only, myself and my partner worked from home during the pandemic, my partner is back at work and I work two days in the office and the rest at home. My usual bill for gas and electricity is around £90 (although fluctuates quarterly and is less during the summer months). It has now gone up to £140 because of my extra usage working from home. I’m scared to use more heating during the winter months in case the price hikes up again. Is this expensive and is this a typical price at this time of year? Sorry I’ve only been a homeowner two years!

Summer months, gas & electric combined bill is usually £40/month then colder months £82/month direct debit.
4 bed detached house built in 1981. On a smart meter.

INeedNewShoes · 10/12/2020 20:38

Direct debit for gas and electricity combined is £62 per month. Small 3 bed house. Just DD and I here. Between us, 4 baths and 3 showers a week, washing machine on 4 times a week.

I am profligate with the heating as I’d rather pay £10 more a month and be warm.

Cook a lot too.

@hardknocklife123 - they all tempt you in with a good deal, then put your bills up after a year.
Ask your provider for what you used in a year, if you can't find it on a bill, then put that through a couple of comparison sites.

£90/month dd (so actual lower in summer, higher in winter), 3 bed, 20 year olds reasonably well insulated semi. 1 or both of us have been working from home since March. Direct debit was previously £76, went up significantly when reviewed in August.

CornishTiger · 10/12/2020 21:07
@CornishTiger does that trigger having to start filling in tax returns etc though ? I've always been on PAYE, not sure I have the strength for anything else.
No not at all. Look it up on money saving expert

MeMeMeYou · 10/12/2020 21:08

In the summer it’s about £90 total (gas and electric) per month. Currently it’s about £150. Big old, cold 4 bed detached house.

cherrypie790 · 10/12/2020 21:13

We live in a rural 80s build large detached. No mains gas supply, so we have a bulk LPG tank. Gas is around £150 a month, and the electricity £120 to £150 depending on season.

And we spend around £200 a year on wood for the woodburner.

LilyLongJohn · 10/12/2020 21:14

3 bed semi, £110 per month

Lobsterquadrille2 · 10/12/2020 21:14

£30-£40 combined gas and electric per month. Large two bedroomed flat, built 1737, no double glazing.

TrickyD · 10/12/2020 21:31

@hardknocklife123

£330!! Each month!! How is everyone else's so cheap. 4 beds - 3 reception.

Who is the cheapest provider?

At last, someone whose bill is larger than ours! We pay £318 a month.

I tried the ‘Look after your Bills’ people but they only take you on if they can save you at least £50 per year.

BurrosTail · 10/12/2020 21:32

£40 per month for both, terraced stone house with 3 small bedrooms. Worth shopping around every year for cheapest deals.

CherryCherries · 10/12/2020 21:33

£43 per month. 3 bed mid terrace. Some of yours are well expensive,!

HasaDigaEebowai · 10/12/2020 21:34

Is there anyone in a larger house who can share how much they pay?

We have a large rural detached property. No gas,( the heating is oil and wood) but our electricity on its own is £152 a month. 2 adults working from home, two teens. I have no idea why its so high tbh

cultkid · 10/12/2020 21:36

About 250 for a 4 bed semi detached 1930s house

QualityFeet · 10/12/2020 21:39

£200ish a month. Six bed Victorian that has drafts and leaky windows. Endless baths and showers and a tumble drier that does at least a load a day. We are on the cheapest tarif and largely warm though our house has hot spots and cold spots depending on which room/hall.

Thecathouse · 10/12/2020 21:59

I have a large three bedroom house (two reception rooms and utility room plus workshop that runs constantly)

We are on a top up meter

The workshop is on a separate meter and used just £10 last month but doesn’t have an associated standing charge

The main house uses £15 per week but that’s with me and toddler at home, and over 10 tanks for reptiles, inverts and fish going with heating and lighting

That’s doesn’t include electric for heating as we are on an oil tank and a big wood stove

Thecathouse · 10/12/2020 22:03

Thinking about it though other than the pets and workshop I use the electric for cooking 3 times a day, boiling the kettle, and evening TV

We spend a lot of time in the gardens and walking

opinionatedfreak · 10/12/2020 22:06

£38 / month.

Mid block. Modern flat. I wfh 1-2 days/ week. At work 2-3.

I rarely put the heating on it is so warm in here.

So main cost is lighting and hot water

combatbarbie · 10/12/2020 22:06

£70 a month in an old (only partially insulated due to refurb) detached, 5 bed, 2 reception, separate kitchen and dining for electricity with outfox the market with hive hub . Our heat is via oil tank.

waitinggame108 · 10/12/2020 22:09

Jesus some of the bills on this thread!!

Ours is £55 a month for 2 bed new build.

£40 electric and £15 gas

The heating goes on Max 2 hours a day as the house gets boiling.

Now with EON but change every year to get the best deal

I live in a 1930s 3 bed semi but it also has 3 large reception rooms.
All windows and doors are the originals, so not double glazed and we have an old boiler.
My duel bill during the winter months is roughly £180 a month!

KatnissNeverdone · 28/12/2020 21:42

£160 a month for us. 3 adults, 2 kids, 5 bedrooms. Dryer on all the time and DS is disabled so we've got electric profiling bed, hoist, electric toilet, rise and fall bath and wheelchair charging which bump up the cost up.

HelloDulling · 28/12/2020 21:43

£190, for a large old draughty house.
