How much do you pay for Gas & Electricity?

Anonymouscat20 · 09/12/2020 16:52

Sorry if that seems like a cheeky question to ask how much everyone pays. Only, myself and my partner worked from home during the pandemic, my partner is back at work and I work two days in the office and the rest at home. My usual bill for gas and electricity is around £90 (although fluctuates quarterly and is less during the summer months). It has now gone up to £140 because of my extra usage working from home. I’m scared to use more heating during the winter months in case the price hikes up again. Is this expensive and is this a typical price at this time of year? Sorry I’ve only been a homeowner two years!

@MEgirl

Is there anyone in a larger house who can share how much they pay? My Direct Debit is over £200 for a 5 bed, 3 reception, large kitchen. I've always thought it to be exorbitant and seems even more so now. I'm not sure who to talk to to find out why it is so high. Or maybe I just need to change supplier.
I'm in a 4 bed detached in Scotland and my screenshot is above. I pay £110 per month and my usage last month is shown £80ish electricity and £50ish gas.

Yes you should look at your actual usage in kwh and do a price comparison

£64/month of in a two bed with 4 radiators and gas cooker. I WFH so heating on in the day when needed.

Cornishmendoitdrekkly · 09/12/2020 20:19

Large 4 bed detached on edge of moor. £68 on electricity and £38 on gas. Keep heating on low 16/17 all day and around 10 at night.

@MEgirl mine is six bed, two receptions, £160 wfh and sahm.

Standrewsschool · 09/12/2020 20:28

We currently pay £95 with Octopus. Previous paying £120 with Ovo. Three people wfh.

Standrewsschool · 09/12/2020 20:30

@MEgirl

Have you tried any of the comparison websites? You get more accurate results if you know your annual usage. You should be given an annual statement from you supplier.

MEgirl · 09/12/2020 22:58

I'm off to check the comparison sites. I'm with Eon who took over our Npower account. I'm supposedly on the best tariff they have available but seem to be paying more than everyone else here. Time to do something about it.

bellsbuss · 09/12/2020 23:04

@MEgirl ours is £168 a month , 6 beds, 3 receptions. Family of 6 , I'm a SAHM and heating is on all day.

Ginfordinner · 09/12/2020 23:14

Our bill for the last month was £102. This covered gas, electricity, telephone and broadband. 4 bed detached, heating on all day as we both WFH.

We have solar panels.

Woohoowoowoo · 09/12/2020 23:20

Definitely recommend getting your usage and getting on a price comparison website.

I live in a new build and it's costing me more to run it on electricity than it was for gas and electric in my previous home that was an 100 year old terrace. We are actually on one of the cheapest tariffs according to the price comparisons, so now I'm looking at my usage. The tumble dryer is the first thing I've knocked on the head.

goingtotown · 09/12/2020 23:22

Every household is different.
How many people live in the house.
How many times is the washing machine used.
How many baths/showers do the family have.
Do you use a tumble dryer?
Do you use the oven daily for family meals, bake cakes & bread.
Do you heat rooms that are not used.
Are you still using halogen light bulbs.
Is the heating on all day

JamieFrasersSwingingKilt · 09/12/2020 23:30

Large detached 4 bedroom house (2600 square feet) with poor insulation. We use 10500 kWh electric only per year. We pay £112 per month. We're with Outfox the Market. Our heating and hot water is through an oil fired boiler so we obviously have that as an extra fuel cost. I'm less exact in those costs but reckon that's another £100 per month probably.

You need to look at your energy usage and compare gas and electricity suppliers via Uswitch or Moneysavingexpert. No point in just looking at prices. Use boiler juice or fuel tool to compare oil prices.

CountessFrog · 09/12/2020 23:31

£238 per month. I had no idea this was especially high until I read this.

Redglitter · 09/12/2020 23:32

£45 for Gas & Electricity. One bedroom house

WaxOnFeckOff · 09/12/2020 23:35

I'm just over £150 a month dual fuel for a 4 bed 4 public room detached older new build that is occupied and heated all day with 2 of us working at home and 1 out the home and student son home part time. We don't heat at all at night , use showers every day and I cook mostly from scratch so oven on a lot.

BackforGood · 09/12/2020 23:57

@MEgirl £122pm for dual fuel here.
6 bed, 3 storey Victorian (so high ceilings etc)

Every time I phone round to change, I get asked 'are you sure' when I tell them our usage, as our figures are "higher than average" apparently.

This was before COVID Winter bills, but I did wfh quite a bit beforehand. This was with at least 2, often 3 Young adults on devices all the time they are home / charging things and so forth.

But £250 seems very high

movinggoalposts · 10/12/2020 02:52

Ours is £268 but we’re paying off a hefty balance which we’d run up when paying £120 a month. Four bedrooms, single glazing, bugger all insulation, high ceilings and teens are not an economical combination, more’s the pity.

CountessFrog · 10/12/2020 19:42

I think ours must be due to the tumble dryer?

BackforGood · 10/12/2020 20:01

We use the tumble drier a lot, too CountessFrog

CornishTiger · 10/12/2020 20:09

Have you claim the £6 a week tax allowance for WFH?

PaperMonster · 10/12/2020 20:18

Small three bed mid terrace. Three of us live here. All electric. £130 per month. Our winter usage is £150-£300 per month but next to nothing once the heating goes off in the warmer months!

BackforGood · 10/12/2020 20:21

@CornishTiger does that trigger having to start filling in tax returns etc though ? I've always been on PAYE, not sure I have the strength for anything else.

Burnthurst187 · 10/12/2020 20:25

£65 a month gas and electric, three bed semi. Try to only put the heating on in the PM

hardknocklife123 · 10/12/2020 20:26

£330!! Each month!! How is everyone else's so cheap. 4 beds - 3 reception.

Who is the cheapest provider?

ureterr1blemuriel · 10/12/2020 20:30

5 bed new build - £100 for both a month and we WFH some of the week. Our old house was 10 years old and much smaller but cost the same. Current new builds are really energy efficient.
