Why is everyone referring to "Santa"

DH and I (from different UK countries and different social class) were both brought up with Father Christmas. Why are so many people calling FC "Santa" these days? Is it just the impact of American culture? Each to their own, but I don't like it.

@Tenyearsgone

Only twats care about this stuff.
This, multiplied by 2. I don't think the thread has gone as the OP intended. They were probably hoping there'll be a chorus of sneery posts condemning the use of the word Santa, coming together in their superiority complex to mock others they deem below them.

"Then one foggy Christmas Eve, Father Christmas came to say.."

"When Father Christmas got stuck up the chimney he began to shout..."

"You better watch out, ... you better not cry I'm telling you why, Father Christmas is coming to town"...

Na. Don't buy it

If this thread doesn’t get repeated every year is it even actually Christmas?

Father Christmas for me and my DH. I'm from the South West and he's from near London. Santa sounds very American to me.

missmouse101 · 08/12/2020 22:08

Always Father Christmas.

LubaLuca · 08/12/2020 22:08

Pater Christmastide is the only name I allow my children to use. If they forget themselves and say 'Father Christmas', I correct them. We're not like those people.

Shieldingending · 08/12/2020 22:09

Always Father Christmas here!

OhCrumbsWhereNow · 08/12/2020 22:10

@CheetasOnFajitas

Funny you should say that... Grin

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 08/12/2020 22:10

I'm in the south east and it's Santa to me. But then, Mrs Bucket-style MIL thinks I'm dreadfully common for saying so. I even say toilet instead of loo sometimes. Xmas Shock

Every.Single.Fucking.Year.
CardinalCat · 08/12/2020 22:10

We've always called him Santa. I'm Irish and my partner is Dutch and we've both grown up with Santa. Always thought FC was quaint and nice but I've never understood its relevance to St Nicholas

diamondpony80 · 08/12/2020 22:11

Growing up in eighties Ireland we always called him Santa. I'm pretty sure my parents did too. My grandparents and other older relations would've referred to him as Father Christmas though so I always thought it was an older generation thing.

Ltdannygreen · 08/12/2020 22:11

I’m from london and always said santa 🤷🏼‍♀️

AliceMadHatter · 08/12/2020 22:11

Midlands, England - Santa

IEat · 08/12/2020 22:12

I'm too lazy to go the whole hog so I say santa

Smallsteps88 · 08/12/2020 22:13

There was actually a really good documentary made in 1985 that clears this up. It’s called Santa Claus: the movie.

Lifeofftheedge · 08/12/2020 22:13

Santa here but one of my parents is Dutch and Santa Claus comes from Sinterklaas.

Bunnybigears · 08/12/2020 22:14

I'm from Yorkshire and used to use Father Christmas but now say Santa.
DH is from the North East and has always said Santy.

Audreyseyebrows · 08/12/2020 22:14

We have always said Father Christmas but dc know that he is also called Santa Claus. Same as I’m called mummy and Audrey.

Peppafrig · 08/12/2020 22:14

@Smallsteps88 that really made me chuckle

WinWinnieTheWay · 08/12/2020 22:15

A lot of you have read into this an insult that isn't intended. I said that DH and I were brought up in different social class and different countries, but still used FC. I had no idea it was so contentious, I just can't work out the geographic divide. When I was little Santa was only heard on TV.

Midlands, Santa 🎅

ErrolTheDragon · 08/12/2020 22:16

As I live in the 'no-one' section of BiBabbles map, I'm claiming it for the Yule Gnome.Grin

Puffthemagicdragongoestobed · 08/12/2020 22:17

Santa is totally fine and as a previous poster pointed out has a real origin. In German it's the Christmas man, I mean that's really dull!

ViciousJackdaw · 08/12/2020 22:18

I have a question for the Dutch amongst us - do you still have Zwarte Piet/Black Peter or is that a no-go these days?
