How cold/warm is your house?

Just taken the temp of ours and it's 11 degrees in our living room, that's with the heating being on for an hour this morning.

Brrrrr.

What is everyone else at?

Rented flat in an old building, open plan kitchen/living room, single glazed, north-facing external wall. Currently it’s about 17 degrees — that’s with the heating on. My last flat was modern and so well insulated that it never fell below 22, even in winter, so this is a shock. We viewed the place on one of the hottest days of the year and moved in during autumn, so hadn’t really expected this. I’m on the sofa wrapped in a blanket and my nose and ears are really cold. Reminds me of my childhood when we had no central heating.

I can’t believe how cold everyone’s houses are!.

They aren't cold. Yours is unusually warm. According to my Hive app, the temperature of the average Hive equipped home is 19 degrees.

timeforanewstart · 08/12/2020 18:59

Thermoset set at 19 but prob hotter upstairs
We tend to have all radiators switched off upstairs other than towel rail as holds heat
House is terraced and only 12 years old , very well insulated

Morgatty · 08/12/2020 19:04

it’s usually around the 26c mark!
That's higher than the average summer temperature where I live, think I'd melt having the inside that temperature! Also the oil bill would be shocking.

GiantKitten · 08/12/2020 19:07

My monthly stats are the same (we’re slightly below average) but one Hive in one room doesn’t tell the whole story. I think every room in our house is a different temperature!
wellthisisnewandconfusing · 08/12/2020 19:14

Jesus. Ours rarely drops below 19. I'm comfortable at 22, happy at 23.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 08/12/2020 19:15

Living room was sitting at 12 yesterday with the radiator on.
I put on an oil heater.
Really need to get quotes for double glazing tbh.

Mintjulia · 08/12/2020 19:17

13° at 2pm. I don't want to turn the heating on during the day so three layers plus a blanket except when doing Zoom interviews It's not stylish but no-one will see Grin

megletthesecond · 08/12/2020 19:19

Thermostat set to 23°.
I'm in cosy clothes to keep properly warm.

bitheby · 08/12/2020 19:23

Mine sometimes gets down to 10. It's about 12 at the moment. I don't have the heating on much and tend to use a heater in whatever room I'm in. It's too cold though! Very old cottage and takes ages to heat up. I should really sort out a system.

ThatDamnKrampus · 08/12/2020 19:25

Bloody hell that's cold!

The thermostat is usually between 18⁰ and 22⁰. 18⁰ my hands and feet risk getting chilly so prefer a bit warmer!

weehoo · 08/12/2020 19:28

15 today while I was working (I keep a jacket on all day)

It's often between 11 and 13 in my very poorly insulated bedroom but weirdly I find it hard to judge temperature since I started cold water swimming!

User0ne · 08/12/2020 19:38

Our downstairs is 1 big room and an unheated utility (old shop). Our main room was 13 this morning when I came down, we have the thermostat set to around 17 in the day and 16 overnight - it's portable though and our upstairs is always warmer.

17 downstairs during the day means 20 upstairs in the home office and 16 upstairs at night means 13 downstairs when we wake up. The utility is about 10 during the day at the moment, I don't go out there for long Grin

AppleWatcher · 08/12/2020 19:40
  1. Anything lower and I'm cold.
pinkbalconyrailing · 08/12/2020 19:42

our thermostat is funny.
it's set to 16 degree at night and 20 during the day.
but the thermometer goes down to 14 in our bedrooms at night and not over 18 during the day.

lifebytheby · 08/12/2020 19:48

Some chilly houses here! It's around 21C inside our place.

sticksticks · 08/12/2020 19:48

We have cavity wall insulation, good loft insulation but the house drops down to 13-15 degrees at the moment. It's now at 16.5 degrees according to the thermostat but I think it's underestimating the temperature.

fucknuckle · 08/12/2020 20:43

currently 14c. i live in a studio flat with really high ceilings and i have a huge single glazed front bay window. i can’t afford to heat the place all day, and today even with the thermostat set to 17.5 i couldn’t get it above 15.5 and the condensation is ludicrous.

i have my window hoover on the go every half an hour but it’s a losing battle.

i have some of the stretchy window film stuff that you seal with a hairdryer on order and am praying it helps. i have arthritis and this is no fun at all. i think last winter i was in such a daze of moving in and trying to sort money that i didn’t realise how bloody cold it was.

today has been ridiculous. pinning all my hopes on window frame cling film! has anyone ever had success with this?

laudemio · 08/12/2020 20:43

You might want to try a decent dehumidifier for a few days op it can really warm up you house. Also don't let it get so cold again, it will get damper the colder it is and harder/more expensive to heat. Our thermostat will not let the temp drop below 15 degrees

purpleme12 · 08/12/2020 21:13

How much do people pay for gas central heating each month?
Really worried about the cost but I'm so unhappy with it's cold

RedTitsMcGinty · 08/12/2020 21:31

@fucknuckle — yep, the window film makes a big difference in terms of reducing condensation.

Bluntness100 · 08/12/2020 21:34

Warm, I think likely between 23 and 25. We have the log burner on and the heating in the rest of the house, I really don’t like it when it’s cold.

It’s also old, listed and draughty,

MiniMum97 · 08/12/2020 21:37

11! Our house is freezing and full of holes but once the heating is on our hall (which is the coldest bit) has never been below 14/15.

Bargebill19 · 08/12/2020 21:42

Sat it shorts and t shirt. 20 deg inside the boat. I love our multi fuel stove.

fucknuckle · 08/12/2020 21:42

@RedTitsMcGinty thank you for the response. the front window is 3m squared so it’s going to be a bit of a job but i’m going to practise on the small side windows first.

i’ve got a dehumidifier but it’s like trying to dry the Thames with a hairdryer - i can’t get the room temp high enough for it to work very well.

i’m eligible for the Warm Home Discount and waiting to hear about that but am doing the window film as otherwise i might as well just go and burn £140 in the garden.

i love my flat but it’s in an old converted house, all a bit of a mish-mash of flats. the woman next door to me only pays a fiver more for a 1 bed place but it’s on the outside wall and corners and fuck trying to heat that! i thought about moving when it came up for rent but the running costs would cripple me and i know she also has single glazed windows and condensation problems.

the thing is, i do love the place. i downsized from a beautiful 4-bed country house when i split from my XP, and for the money and it being a studio the place is massive. i sometimes go on right move to see what else is about for £500pcm and it’s all tiny studios or house shares. in here i have my bed, 2 sofas, telly unit, 4 chests of drawers and two bookcases and it’s still cavernous. i am however campaigning for a new front door and a new loo but the landlord is terrible about responding to requests for maintenance. i can see daylight round my door (i know, draught tape, it’s on the way but i want the maintenance guy to see it without so he can agree how pointless the door is).

short version: thank you for cheering me up about the window film!
