Thought I’d set this up as we don’t seem to have one. Please delete if we do and I’ve missed it.

Matt Hancock was asked about shielding in the first question from a member if the public. He confirmed shielding will end on 31/3.

FlatteredFool · 17/03/2021 19:21

Woohoo!

user907834 · 17/03/2021 20:08

Do your workplaces expect you back on 31/3 or after second jab? My manager has said he doesn't want me back in work till after my 2nd dose.

MarieVanGoethem · 18/03/2021 00:10

@Teaistheanswer
I’d another text through to ask me to book, yes: can’t quite believe it, mind you. And at least this time I know to ice my arm before the jab as well as after! Hope you get contacted about yours soon.

Teaistheanswer · 18/03/2021 07:01

Thank you @marievangoethem - yes get icing!

I wonder when we'll get our update email. I felt once again that we're an afterthought although let's be honest it's felt like that the whole way along Hmm An announcement about shielding shouldn't be relegated to just if someone asks a question! Also they banged on about everyone having two weeks notice of changes....well obviously they meant everyone else. Fully expecting call from headteacher planning my return now that I "know" shielding is ending when I actually 'know' none of the details and probably won't until the day before...or the morning of the 31st!
Sorry, bit ranty today, we lost my DFIL to Covid and it's his funeral tomorrow which I'll be watching via video link Sad think I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by it all at the mo.

MarieVanGoethem · 18/03/2021 11:36

@Teaistheanswer
I’m so sorry for your loss - it’s so hard to grieve when you can’t do the normal things, too. That lack of information around shielding ending is incredibly frustrating, & it must be so much worse for you on top of everything else.

MarieVanGoethem · 18/03/2021 11:59

Oh, for an edit button...

Anyway, according to the BBC we’ll have our new letters in the next couple of weeks (I mean, presumably before shielding ends or they’ll not be much use Hmm ) - & the advice will include continuing to work from home if you’re able to. Which is tricky for people who work in schools, I know - hopefully SLTs will be accommodating given apparently the advice, even with shielding ending, will still be to avoid other people as much as possible...

Mummylin · 18/03/2021 13:44

I have just this minute had my email about stopping shielding on 31st March.

Mummylin · 18/03/2021 13:46

Copied part of email
Guidance for clinically extremely vulnerable is changing from 1 April

On 22 February the Government published a roadmap out of the national restrictions for the whole population, which explains how restrictions will be eased over time. As part of this roadmap, we can now inform you that from 1 April 2021 you are no longer advised to shield.

Since the national restrictions and shielding measures were introduced in January, cases of COVID-19 have fallen considerably across all parts of the country and over 22 million people have had at least one dose of the vaccine. We know that shielding has not been easy for you and we would like to thank you for your efforts during this challenging time

MarieVanGoethem · 18/03/2021 14:36

I’ve just had mine - seemed best to share the whole thing, knowing (from past experience) some of you won’t get yours for several hours:

(Apologies to those in NI, Scotland & Wales.)

^Guidance for clinically extremely vulnerable is changing from 1 April

On 22 February the Government published a roadmap out of the national restrictions for the whole population, which explains how restrictions will be eased over time. As part of this roadmap, we can now inform you that from 1 April 2021 you are no longer advised to shield.

Since the national restrictions and shielding measures were introduced in January, cases of COVID-19 have fallen considerably across all parts of the country and over 22 million people have had at least one dose of the vaccine. We know that shielding has not been easy for you and we would like to thank you for your efforts during this challenging time.

Although clinically extremely vulnerable people will no longer be advised to shield, we still recommend that you take extra precautions to protect yourself while the virus is still spreading in our communities. The updated guidance provides practical steps that cover things like socialising, travel and going to work and school. These are not rules but advice, so you can choose whether you wish to follow them or not. You can find the full guidance at the end of this letter and at www.gov.uk/coronavirus.

In addition to this advice, you must continue to follow the regulations that are in place for everyone during the pandemic. This includes rules on mixing with people from other households.

Summary of advice that applies from 1 April 2021

Until the social distancing rules are eased more widely, it is important that you continue to keep the number of social interactions that you have low and try to reduce the amount of time you spend in settings where you are unable to maintain social distancing.

Everyone is advised to continue to work from home where possible, but if you cannot work from home you should now attend your workplace. Your employer is required to take steps to reduce the risk of exposure to COVID-19 in the workplace and should be able to explain to you the measures they have put in place to keep you safe at work.

The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (furlough) has been extended until 30 September as has the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS). You may continue to be eligible throughout this period.

From 1 April you will no longer be eligible for Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) on the basis of being advised to shield.

Clinically extremely vulnerable pupils and students should return to their school or other educational settings.

COVID-19 vaccinations

If you are aged 16 or older, you should already have been offered your first dose of the vaccine. If you have not yet received your first dose, please contact your GP.

For children aged 12 to 15 years, vaccination may be appropriate for those with severe neuro-disabilities. This option should be discussed between parents/guardians and the child’s clinician or GP. For other children aged 15 and under, whilst further research is being done, vaccination is not yet recommended.

If you have received your first dose, you should still ensure you take up your second dose of the vaccine when it is offered to you. Having two doses should further increase your level of protection.

No vaccine is 100% effective and therefore even if you have had both doses, there is still no absolute guarantee that you will not become ill from COVID-19. Therefore, you should continue to take the extra precautions set out in this guidance to help protect yourself.

Access to support

Local councils and supermarkets will continue to provide support to follow shielding advice until 31 March. Councils will look to provide assistance wherever possible after that date and, if you have already registered for priority access to supermarket delivery slots, supermarkets will continue to offer priority access until 21 June. If you have yet to register for support but are in need, please do so online at www.gov.uk/coronavirus-shielding-support by 31 March. If you do not have internet access, please contact your local council who will be able to connect you to the support that is available in your local area.

After 31 March, if you are struggling as a result of Coronavirus please visit www.gov.uk/find-coronavirus-support or contact your local council to find out what support is available.

Access to health and care

Please remember that the NHS is open, and we urge you to continue to access all the NHS services that you need. It is likely to be safer for you to use the NHS than to try to manage alone.

If you are concerned about the impact of COVID-19 on your health, speak to your GP, hospital clinician or use NHS111. Further information on accessing help and support can be found in the attached guidance.

Contacting you if this guidance changes in the future

Please make sure your GP has your most up to date contact details, including your home address and, if possible, a personal email address, so that we can contact you quickly in the event that the guidance changes in the future.

Once again, we thank you for your efforts to keep yourself and others safe.

Yours sincerely,

MATT HANCOCK

Secretary of State for Health and Social Care

ROBERT JENRICK

Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government^

Babysharkdoodoodood · 18/03/2021 14:48

Got mine today as well. Still advised to work from home. I like it and means I don't have to mix with the mean bitches at work.

I'm looking at a lateral move into a new area come June, to the front office do I get to meet officers and the public rather than being cooped up in despatch with an all woman team every single shift.

Meanwhile making more friends across the whole area via Skype meetings has proved a lifesaver. On nights tonight and tomorrow which can be a bit lonely but I can stoke the fire up and curl up in front of my laptop in my pj's.

DH is having to have bp medication as his is soaring, plus blood tests, so that's now a worry as well. And neither us nor the aged parents have been offered our second jab yet.

Teaistheanswer · 18/03/2021 15:41

Thanks @marievangoethem and @mummylin for posting the email. I guess at least it's arrived before 31st!
Was really hoping to have had my second jab before going back but tbh I shall still be keeping my distance just as much when I have. My school is in very tight small bubbles now but I'm very much expecting that as i have had the first vaccine my head will expect me to go between bubbles to teach in my year group regardless.
I'll contact her and brace myself for the response Confused
@babysharkdoodoodood glad to hear you've made some friends over Skype and that you've got a better move planned. I joked with my class over live storytime that I'm living in a borrowers world where everyone is tiny! The last few months consist of inch high faces! Everyone will look huge in real life Grin

Poppystars · 19/03/2021 12:24

Hi,
Just catching up on posts.
@TOWGA - I have the opposite problem. Shielding letters from early April 2020, then got to vaccine and did not get group 4 vaccine. Go secretary said I had been moved to G6 by a Gp. No Gp would talk to me as too busy to talk about vaccines. So as a teacher had to go back into school as was no longer shielding. Then saw my main consultant who said I should shield, she contacted my Gp my letter and told them I was to shield. As I have several Group 6 medical issues plus a rather unusual medical condition that means I need to shield for that alone. My work were not happy! So I am back shielding. Back into school on 1st April though.

Poppystars · 19/03/2021 12:35

@MarieVanGoethem great you have a second dose.thanks for sharing Gov letters, as I am not getting any yet as it takes time to put people back onto the system and get letters.

@user907834 as a teacher, I am expected back into school on 1st April ( last day fo term before Easter holidays). And I will only have had one dose ( due to the mistake taking me off shielding meaning my second dose is not due to the end of May, not that I have a date for it.)

@Teaistheanswer sorry for your loss.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 26/03/2021 22:44

So we're not back until management have done risk assessments and we've had a chat with occ health. Still not had jab 2 yet though
The other thing is that they're setting up a buddy system to ease us back in, only I've been given the worst, bitchiest person as my buddy. Ugh!

I so hope I get this new post and soon!

MarieVanGoethem · 27/03/2021 04:23

Special times on Wednesday: my portacath had spontaneously unblocked. The IR Consultant had seen it a couple of times before with paeds patients, though even there their ports weren’t as completely blocked as mine; nor had they been left for over two months. But crucial thing is that I’ve a working port ready for rheumatology at start of next month; with awesome bonus of not having had to have it replaced.

GP who did my second jab yesterday morning was weirdly (worryingly, frankly) impressed by my, er, understanding & taking responsibility for managing my various health conditions Hmm TBH I feel a bit of an eejit taking tape I’m not allergic to with me, but he was super-enthusiastic... I’m trying to convince myself that having - according to jabbing!GP - had a worse reaction than is usual to the first jab I’m going to be grand this time, just to be contrary. Mindless optimism?

Somehow, over a year into the pandemic, the BBC remain unable to tell the difference between the “clinically vulnerable” & “clinically extremely vulnerable” groups. When they’re talking about people getting booster jabs in the autumn, it’s VITAL they get it right. They do later in the article, but later’s no use. Constantly muddling the two groups together helps nobody. And goodness knows what GPs won’t need while trying to finish up COVID jabs for the general population AND sort their flu jab programme is having people wanting to know why THEY/their family member(s) aren’t getting a booster jab because that’s what it’s said in the news... It’s so SO irresponsible & it muddles things for the general public as well & just...

@Babysharkdoodoodood
How’s your DH? Any news on 2nd jabs for the family Shark yet? Am glad you’ve been able to make friends over Skype; & hope you manage to get your move. Really REALLY hope you’re spared having to spend any real amount of time with Mme Misery-Making Meaniepants at work.

@Teaistheanswer
Any news on your return to work? Am crossing my fingers & holding my thumbs that your SLT will pay attention to the guidance... is a bit mad there being this whole fanfare over shielding “ending” when the new guidance is basically “I mean, we’re not going to offer you any kind of support any more, but please continue to avoid people like plague...” Hmm

@Poppystars
Am glad putting the letter up was helpful - dreadful (& utterly ridiculous) you’re still not getting them; but fantastic your consultant sorted things out.

Text of screenshot: (underlining signifies highlighted text)
Nadhim Zahawi told the Daily Telegraph the first booster doses will go to the over-70s, health and social care staff and the clinically vulnerable.
Scientists have been developing booster jabs to combat new Covid variants.
More than 29 million people in the UK have now had a first dose of a vaccine.
Revealing details of the plan to the newspaper, Mr Zahawi said the "most likely date" for booster jabs to begin would be September.
He said deputy chief medical officer Jonathan Van-Tam thought "that if we are going to see a requirement for a booster jab to protect the most vulnerable, [it] would be around September".
The first booster jabs will be given to those in the top four priority groups of the vaccine rollout - which include the over-70s, health and social care workers and the clinically extremely vulnerable.

Thread 4 Shielding chat
Babysharkdoodoodood · 27/03/2021 19:58

@MarieVanGoethem None of us have had 2nd jab. DH is paying (via insurance)for kidney ultrasound rather than wait 4 weeks. Ugh.

MarieVanGoethem · 28/03/2021 05:12

@Babysharkdoodoodood
Will cross my fingers & hold my thumbs for you all. Am having a bit of a rough reaction, but Totally Worth It.

MarieVanGoethem · 29/03/2021 10:29

Er, so, my wee app thingy just pinged to tell me “there has been a change!” & when I went to look it sent me off to the new general covid-19 guidance.

Had a wee read, and this bit (bolding mine) leapt out at me like a mad leaping thing:
If you are clinically extremely vulnerable or live with someone who is clinically extremely vulnerable
If you have been identified as being clinically extremely vulnerable you are strongly advised to work from home because of the risk of exposure to the virus. If you cannot work from home, then we advise you do not attend work.

Which is rather a change from the guidance they sent us. As in, the complete opposite of what they told us Hmm
Know that’s important for @Teaistheanswer & @Poppystars - am sure we’ve other people who are school-based too...

Anewuser · 29/03/2021 16:12

Thank you @MarieVanGoethem, I spoke to my head teacher last week. We agreed for me not to return on Thursday but only because that's silly with school breaking up for Easter after lunch. It would be more disruptive. I am to return after Easter holidays though.
Do you think we'll officially hear about the guidance?

Teaistheanswer · 29/03/2021 16:31

Thank you @marievangoethem you are such a reliable font of all knowledge Grin I have an phonecall meeting with my head tomorrow morning about my return and I was all set to go back on Thursday but will now have another look at the guidance before our discussion.

Poppystars · 29/03/2021 17:41

Thank you @MarieVanGoethem that is so helpful. Having spoken to a receptionist, they have not apparently received the two letters from consultants to say I am back shielding, so my codes not updated by them! So having removed me, refused to allow me to talk to a Gp about why, failed to inform me they have removed me, they now do not seem to have medical letters. Mmmm .... my husband is going to photocopy them and hand them over in personal - if they refuse access to the Gp for this and insist he posts them then I am afraid that is not acceptable as they seem to lose things linked to this for some reason!

So your information is invaluable due to the failings of certain parts of the nhs in my area!!

I too will be phoning school tomorrow. My school has a policy of keeping all staff in if a child in the room is positive, but sending all children home to isolate. No idea why staff don’t catch this airborne disease but students cannot. As we have positive cases in school, but the staff have not been allowed to isolate, I am rather anxious.

MarieVanGoethem · 30/03/2021 04:58

The guidance is available here & very worryingly it’s dated 18 March, same as the email (day after the letter). There’s no use changing it & not telling the people who need to know though, because why on earth would people go trawling through the online guidance rather than consulting their email/letter? I only chanced across it because I was curious about my app going ping at me; I’d the time to see what it meant; I read so quickly I saw no harm in skimming The New Rules; & while I read quickly I take it all in, so I noticed the change!

But then, ending shielding isn’t really about what’s in our best interests, is it? They’ve made a huge fuss about it, but really what they’re doing (again) is ending support for people who’re shielding. Ugh.

@Anewuser - I’m so sorry I forgot to tag you: I knew there was [at least] one other person I needed to but I just couldn’t think who & also lacked the wit to display full thread and do a keyword search. Am not going to try said game now, either, because I really ought to be being asleep... would be good if they’d have decency to contact people about the change, but expecting decency from this shower... Hmm

@Teaistheanswer - on grounds I can’t pass for ornamental I’ve an obligation to be useful Wink hope the phonecall with your Head goes well: not helpful the new guidance doesn’t come with an end date, I’ve realised, though I suppose perhaps it’s to be looked at with each stage of The Roadmap Hmm

@Poppystars - all of that sounds incredibly stressful! Have you an email address for the practice manager at your GP Surgery? You’ve certainly cause for complaint about how all this has been handled, & they’re the first step there. There are some practices who’ve not been accepting copies of things submitted by patients by hand due to (perceived) COVID risk of their doing so - not sure how recently that was so that bit of idiocy may have died down, but if you can find a way to submit by email...

VictoriaBun · 30/03/2021 13:09

My dh received his end to shielding letter today . Strangely , we are not rushing off to the beach, mixing in the park with the hordes, nor rushing around to chat with everyone we have not seen these past months ( year )
You would think they would want the cev to have had both vaccines before they run around gung-ho .

Anewuser · 30/03/2021 22:28

Don’t worry @MarieVanGoethem, you’re always very good at including everyone. I hope you eventually got some sleep.

@Teaistheanswer and @Poppystars, how did your phone calls go to school?
