Leaving an 11yo while going to the hairdressers.

I've got a hairdresser apt on Thursday, mid morning. They are like hens teeth, I booked this ages ago, and there are now no free slots until after Xmas.
As from last Wednesday , yr6 DS is self isolating as one of his classmates has tested positive. He is currently perfectly well.
DH mostly works from home, but has now been called to do a site visit that can't be rearranged on Thursday 😡.

The salon is a ten minute walk. My hair usually takes under an hour to do, so I think I'll be back out of the house for 1hr20mins tops. We have a landline and DS has a mobile. He'd be playing Xbox whilst we're gone, and he knows not to answer the door if we're out.

Would you leave him alone to go for a haircut?

Yes that will be fine and I am pretty cautious about these things

StrippedFridge · 07/12/2020 13:58

Definitely. No problem.

I left DS for that long from age 8 or 9. There are 11 year olds in secondary school home alone for two hours after school every day.

Yes that's fine

passthemustard · 07/12/2020 14:00

Yes. Perfectly fine.

JollyJingleJemima · 07/12/2020 14:01

Yes of course.

ScalpHelp · 07/12/2020 14:01

Can you go to the hairdressers if someone in your household is self isolating though? If there’s a risk he has it, there’s a risk you may too.

ScalpHelp · 07/12/2020 14:02

But otherwise he’s not too young to be left alone for an hour

jessstan1 · 07/12/2020 14:02

Definitely, an eleven year old will be fine on their own at home.

HuntedForest · 07/12/2020 14:07

Perfectly fine.

But judging from your post, you've never left him alone before. So would he be happy with that? Usually you build up to it, not never leave them and then leave them for over an hour.

jinglejanglerumbalows · 07/12/2020 14:10

@HuntedForest he's been left for 30-45mins before when I've popped to the shops, and he was fine.

@ScalpHelp everyone in the household can go about their normal business. DH and I are going to work, his sibling is going to school.

I would definitely do this. I do with my 10 year old.

UserEleventyNine · 07/12/2020 14:14

Of course. He'll be at secondary school next year, he should be building up some independence. I'd say that next (school) year he ought to be able to come home on his own, get himself a drink and a snack and be at home on his own for an hour or two if you and DH have to be somewhere else.
