Weight gain during pregnancy?

babymum786 · 06/12/2020 22:09

Just needed a little bit of advice. I have put on 1 Stone (7kg) since the beginning of my pregnancy up until now (21 weeks). Is this too less? Any advice would be appreciated, thank you!

No, why would it be too low? I put on 11 kg for my first, and 9 kg for both my successive pregnancies .
You are only halfway through the pregnancy and your baby doesn't even weight 500 gr, so all good.

Well I think the average (or ideal) is about 2 stone total.. so half way and half way there!
Though to be honest it varies depending on your starting point! If you were underwedight to start with... a bit extra is maybe good. If overweight you can afford not to put on much at all... the baby will take what it needs regardless!
My dd1 is also 21 weeks pregnant and is one size up in trousers (wearing my jeggings instead of hers!) but apart from the little bump emerging the rest seems to be her bust!

Thank you for the replies! I was very underweight at the beginning of my pregnancy with a BMI of 16. So just wondering if I'm doing okay. Have been really worried 🥺

Excessive bodyweight gain in pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of autism even if we don't exactly know why

Don't focus on the scale but on the quality of your diet since a child's neurological development starts in the womb. Eat a lot of vegetables with plenty of variety and colours, which will also help when it comes to weaning.

I think I put on about 18lbs total with my first and maybe a bit more for my 2nd (25 lbs ish?). This was by the time I went into labour. If you were underweight to begin with though, that sounds like a really sensible amount so far.

babymum786 · 06/12/2020 23:12

@mindutopia Thank you so much for the reassurance! That seems like a reasonable amount. I think I'll have to discuss with my midwife as I'm unsure. It's my first pregnancy...

I was at my lowest weight when I become pregnant, with a BMI of 18.

DS was born a little premature, at 36 weeks, and by that point I’d gained about 3st. From 8st to 11st. At the time I remember reading somewhere that if you’re overweight you should put on one stone, two if you’re in the healthy weight range, and three if you’re underweight.

The bulk of the weight went on in the latter part of the pregnancy.

A chat with the midwife would be good, to set your mind at rest and to ensure you’re eating a good and balanced diet.
