Could anyone recommend a good box set I can buy on DVD?

I'm looking for a box set I can buy for DM's birthday. She likes crime dramas and has seen a lot of the ones on terrestrial tv (doesn't have Netflix, Amazon Prime etc). Favourites include Shetland, Vera, Endeavour, Agatha Christies etc. Last year DB bought her Line of Duty which she enjoyed.

She'd probably prefer British dramas or maybe scandi - she does like Wallander.

She's stuck at home on her own at the moment and will be on her own for Christmas so I thought she'd like a series to watch. It would have to be something I can get for her on DVD.

Suggestions very welcome

My mother has similar tastes... and absolutely loved Succession (as did I!). Both seasons are being released together tomorrow.

Unforgotten
Fortitude
Cardinal
Agatha Raisin
Sherlock
The crown? (I know that's not a crime drama)

I am huge scandi noir fan and I think of all that I’ve watched over the years, the absolutely most compelling was The Killing. Just Brilliant.

And unusually, both the original danish AND the US version were equally good. Highly recommended. (I might watch it again over Christmas!)

I think she's probably seen Sherlock and The Killing. I don't think she'd go for The Crown- she was so against the monarchy when we were growing up we'd have to go abroad when there was a royal wedding Smile

I'm look into the others though as don't know much about them, thanks

Foyle’s War
The Bletchley Circle

If she is mainly watching terrestrial tv, would she not enjoy something that isn't usually available to her. Any of the UK ones I can think of I wonder if she might have already seen? Also the ones you list are all quite tame, Luther for example is good but in comparison to Endeavour its terrifying and much more graphically violent!

The Killing is excellent, I also enjoyed The Bridge and I think Borgen for Scandi stuff.

There are a few US ones she most likely wouldn't have seen which are very good, although even I watch with subtitles on. Try Fargo, Big Little Lies, Narcos, The Stranger, Ozarks.

Inspector Montalbano?

FrancesHaHa · 06/12/2020 21:08

Its hard to think of something that she hasn't seen but would enjoy. I don't think she'd watch something like Luther. She's seen Inspector Montalbano. I'll have a look into some of these others. Subtitles are good - she uses them anyway as she gets more hard of hearing. Thanks

Going to take a punt on succession, but keeping a note of the others for future reference. There's a few that I haven't seen that I quite fancy too!

Desperate housewives is great

Sounds like Bletchley Circle would be a very good fit.
