My Christmas playlist needs an update so feel free to add any suggestions to this thread for favourites I might not have heard of.

I'll offer up The Unthanks - Tar Barrel in Dale and The Mediaeval Babes - Gaudete

Wilde Winter Songbook - Kim Wilde. There are some fantastic songs on there - lots of variety

Fascinating Aidas Christmas Message

Definitely NOT suitable for children or work!

Just Like Christmas by Low - it has jingly sleigh bells and everything.

The Dandy Warhols cover of Little Drummer Boy.

Christmas Eve by Teenage Fanclub, or the cover by Gorky's Zygotic Mynci.

From Spirits and Ghosts (Score for a Dark Christmas) by Tarja is an album of christmas songs and carols sung in a sort of operatic orchestral gothic style. It's got a stonking version of Walking in the Air!

RusholmeRuffian · 06/12/2020 19:47

Oi To The World by the Vandals

Splodgetastic · 06/12/2020 19:49

I want a hippopotamus for Christmas.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 06/12/2020 20:06

Splodge I listened to Kate Rusby singing I want a hippopotamus today. I have a small river at the bottom of my garden Dh and i agreed i could have a pigmy hippo and keep it in the river. It has to be a pigmy as I couldn't fit a full size one in my car.

Graveyard of the Outcast Dead by Frank Turner. I don't think he intended it to be a Christmas song as I think it was released in July 2019. It does mention Christmas a lot though. I think it's a sad but beautiful song.

BearSoFair · 09/12/2020 13:43

35 I saw him last December and he did call it a Christmas song! "I thought 'sex work and forgotten graves, that's the key to a Christmas number one'"

35andThriving · 09/12/2020 17:29

Grin BearSoFair Not a run of the mill Christmas song, is it?!! I love it though.

I'd not heard any of Frank Turner's music before.

DrCoconut · 09/12/2020 20:43

I like 50 grand for Christmas because it's so terrible and tacky it's good, along with the storyline too. And a band called lost hollow if anyone has heard of them? They did a couple of Christmas songs.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 09/12/2020 21:36

Feet - Vegetarian Christmas

35andThriving · 10/12/2020 20:02

Baby It's Cold Outside by Josiah Lemanski and Lydia Liza...It's different to the usual version Smile

Inertia · 10/12/2020 22:34

It feels like Christmas in our house when Gideon Coe plays the Steeleye Span version of Gaudete :)

Other ideas-

Just like Christmas by Low
Wish it was Christmas today- Julian Casablancas
any of the Sufijaan Stevens Christmas albums
It's cliched to be cynical at Christmas by Half Man half Biscuit

More winter than Christmas specifically:

Last of the melting snow- Leisure Society
White winter hymnal- Fleet Foxes
Winterlong- Neil Young (or the Pixies cover)

JimmyJabs · 11/12/2020 11:47

That Steeleye Span version of Gaudete is inextricably linked with Alan Partridge in my mind, unfortunately! He plays it in his car while he's trying to impress his potential love interest 😁

Thank you to those posters who suggested I Want a Hippopotamus and the Frank Turner song - added them both to our Christmas playlist and loving them.

I also found a version of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas by First Aid Kit and added White Winter Hymnal by Fleet Foxes.
