Booked flight through Expedia... airline charged me 3 times!

Can anybody advise me please. I booked flights on Expedia a few days ago. Got a receipt. Then today my Debit card was declined. Checked online banking and the airline have charged me 3 times and emptied my bank account! I only got one receipt so I don’t think it’s my fault. Also the amounts are all different.

I can’t get through to Expedia or the airline and I’m going to be stranded with no money. Please help me. Does anybody have a number at Expedia for emergencies? Thanks.

Expedia’s phone numbers are displayed on their sites. Also, if you are in the UK, try Googling “how to speak to a real person at Expedia, UK”. Unfortunately, we are not in normal times when it comes to contacting organisations.

Expedia also have an on line complaints process.

Either way, you are entitled to a refund under the Distance Selling Directive; EU legislation still applies in the UK.

In the meantime, do speak to your bank pronto, they too, should be able to assist, they have contacts with large organisations and may be able to arrange an emergency overdraft etc, until the funds are returned.

Let us know how you get on.

I'm sorry to have to say this but are you sure you booked on a legit Expedia site ? There are so many fake travel booking sites that look like Expedia or Opodo but they are just a fake interface .
Did you get pulled through from a comparison site ? Might be worth investigating with them.
There is so much of this kind of thing about. Only ever book flights directly on the airline's own website.

I hope you get it sorted

Speak to your bank and raise a chargeback against the unexpected amounts. Also ask the bank to check if it is really Expedia that have taken the charges.

I’ve spoken to Expedia, they said they only sent the booking to the airline once, so there’s nothing they can do.

I can’t get hold of the airline.

OP, go straight back to the bank and at the same time raise a formal complaint with Expedia.

If you don’t have a Twitter account, consider opening one and tweeting Expedia and the airline.

WineAndHobnobs · 06/12/2020 08:01

Thanks. I will. The ‘fake’ amounts have our ticket numbers, which is strange.

Speak to your bank! The fraud team will look into this and you can be reimbursed by tonight or tomorrow... depending on the amount.

WineAndHobnobs · 06/12/2020 09:07

So I’ve just spoken to the airline and they’ve confirmed they only have one amount. One thing I don’t understand, is that my bank statement clearly gives the name of the airline in all three amounts, yet the airline are saying the money goes to Expedia.

You really need to talk to your bank. The amount of detail on statements can vary.

WineAndHobnobs · 06/12/2020 09:26

OK so we’ve discovered it is fraud. Someone at Expedia leaked our credit card details and flight numbers. Not sure what to do now, to be honest. They’ve emptied our bank account.

Oh and the airline told me that people can give any name when they take money, hence the name of the airline next to the amounts on my bank statement. In fact, the airline never at any point have our credit card details when you book through Expedia.

Get on to your bank to let them know. I once had multiple payments made to a payday loan company and once the bank were satisfied it wasn't my doing they reimbursed me.

VettiyaIruken · 06/12/2020 10:19

If it's an Expedia employee then surely they are liable?

Speak to your bank.
LaBodDelMed · 06/12/2020 10:23

/ credit card company.

TravellingSpoon · 06/12/2020 10:59

What you need to do is speak to your bank and raise it as fraud.

WineAndHobnobs · 07/12/2020 22:25

I spoke to the bank today and they are investigating. They said they’ve seen something similar before with Expedia, where the extra money was mysteriously deposited back into the account a week later, but we don’t have the luxury of waiting for that.

Expedia are refusing to take any responsibility, in spite of them being the only ones who had both my credit card details AND booking numbers.
