Pounding headache and run out of painkillers

Jenasaurus · 06/12/2020 00:15

Ive tried putting a cold bottle on my neck and massaging my temple, drinking lots of water as think im dehydrated, but I cant sleep as the pain is throbbing all over my head. Anyone got any other tips of something I can do to allieviate the pain.

That sounds tough @Jenasaurus - I found that caffeine could sometimes help my headache so a cup of tea?

Otherwise could you do either a hot or cold compress where it hurts (frozen peas / hot water bottle) - perhaps something colder than you have tied

Lie still / dark room / water to drink

Can you ask someone to drop you some paracetamol/ nurefon - or go get you some

Have you got any Vicks vaporrub or tiger balm? That on your neck and temples may help a little to distract you.

cup of tea and a lie down in a dark room

Cool cloth on your forehead may help a little

Double check any old handbags for paracetamol?

Any kids calpol in a cupboard?

Sometimes if painkillers arent working for me when my head is pounding it helps to have a bath or a shower, I dont know if it's the steam or the temperature or what.

I've also read that putting your feet in a bowl of hot water and then leaning forward and putting a bag of ice or something cold on the back of your head/neck can help but I've never tried it. Something to do with the difference in temperature in different parts of the body.

thanks for the responses, fluffysocks75 I have just found 2 flu tablets in an old bag so taken them. I didnt realise Caffeine helps, I tend to avoid it as i thought it causes migraines.

Or can you stand at the back door for a few minutes to get some fresh air?

Ive got my bedroom window wide open, to see if that helps :)

I rarely get headaches, but when I do they feel like my head is going to explode, I am also not passing much urine so think its definitely dehydration

The most common cause of headaches is dehydration so make sure you drink some water. Then lay in a dark room.

MumbleBee20 · 06/12/2020 00:30

Standing bare foot on a cold floor sometimes works for me.

motorcyclenumptiness · 06/12/2020 00:36

Weirdly, pressing the bump on the roof of your mouth with your thumb can help (particularly with a stress headache)

grassisjeweled · 06/12/2020 01:43

Came on to suggest cold and flu pills

Salty foods and Coke (cola!) also helps

Stepintochristmas2020 · 06/12/2020 06:12

Hope it cleared up and you had a good sleep OP.

I was told before than caffeine speeds up the medication working, that's why the actifast paracetamol have a small dose of caffeine in them (500mg paracetamol and 32mg caffeine). Coke is also supposed to be good to drink when taking paracetamol.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 06/12/2020 11:19

I always find ice cold Coke helps me

Jenasaurus · 06/12/2020 22:41

Thanks everyone, I managed to sleep, I woke with the head pounding again, had caffiene and bought some painkillers, drank loads of water and seem OK again, appreciate your tips for the next time

OP, hope you are feeling better?

Have you tried those 4Head strips for migraine sufferers? There is also a cooling stick to apply to temples. I think there is another brand called Kool something.

They really help me and reduce the number of painkillers I have to take.
