Why do so many people add in r's where there isn't one 😆. It's a particular bug bear of mine

I think it’s just to show pronounciation, there’s not an r sound when they say it.

I can’t work out how to show it without an rrr

Thee ehg ter? Maybe?

Because in a non rhotic accent the rrrs aren’t prominent, so I don’t bother to think about how it is in someone else’s accent. Eg I say cah and car the same.

midnightstar66 · 06/12/2020 09:03

Thee ah ter surely?

I'm Scottish, we say our r's so if I see thee arr ter that's how it sounds complete with r sound. My dad does however add r sounds all over the place so it is a thing. Some people will actually say the r

Ah ok. I think most people here are just using ar to show ah though.

We need to use proper pronunciation symbols like in the dictionary Grin

Because we’re showing how we pronounce it. Not how it’s spelled.

The first sound “ea” without the r in my accent would be pronounced “ee”. I don’t pronounce it th-ee-tuh, I pronounce it th-ear-tuh.

anastasiakrupnik · 06/12/2020 18:36

DH says thee-A-ta.
I thought he was doing a comedy posh voice each time for the first ten years.

Turns out that's just how he speaks (Essex). He also says bald like 'bowel-d".

I say thee-uh-tuh like a normal person.

😆 why the 🤯?

“ea” is the sound in sea, tea, plea. The first syllable of theatre does not rhyme with those words. It rhymes with ear, dear, rear. Hence the use of an r to indicate that difference.

Obviously people with rhotic accents would pronounce the r rather than using it to elongate the vowels in front, but as the majority of accent in this country are non rhotic, the fact that people don’t pronounce the r shouldn’t be a surprising concept?

If there is a way of phonetically writing the ‘ear’ sound without the use of the letter r, I’m...er...all ears (sorry!), but I can’t think of one. “eah” would be two syllables.

Rhotic accents actively pronounce the r in words. American accents are rhotic. Scottish accents are. South West England. Most English accents are non rhotic. Think of the difference between an American saying car and a generic Southern English accent pronouncing it.
GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/12/2020 09:41

Theer-ter.

Thee-ayter is certain-accents American, isn’t it? I’d be startled to hear a Brit pronounce it like that.

ThisBear · 07/12/2020 09:42

Rhotic here. It makes sense that non-rhotic speakers soften out the r but I am sometimes surprised by how strongly pronounced the substitutions are, if that makes sense? How definite the r sound is when people add it, as in theerr-taah, with a strong r and then no hint of the original r remaining.

This thread is bringing back some horrible memories. I came from a WC/non-educated background but was deemed clever enough to end up in a posh school, surrounded by children of academics and professionals. I was aware that the way I spoke would often give me away but didn't realise quite so much until, during an English class, where I was giving a talk about a play, one of my so-called friends suddenly yelled out in front of everyone "can't you pronounce theatre properly, who taught you to speak like that?". Everyone fell about laughing and I was utterly humiliated. I was a "thee-ate-urr" pronouncer, with the emphasis on the second syllable, until that point but learned that it was "thee-uh-tr" from then on. Unfortunately, I not only had to spend the next 4 years of school with people randomly asking me to say theatre but, once I'd got the correct pronunciation into my head, my mum went off on me for speaking like a posh twat.

I've never yet been pulled up on my pronunciation of adhesive though and yes, I pronounce the h.

I'm east-coast Scotland if that helps.
