I used to say 'thee et argh' but I've noticed that now I say 'thee ert uh'. I don't know why that changed, with age I think.

newnewnewbuild · 05/12/2020 23:05

Theatre I pronounce as two syllables like theer-tuh (theer to rhyme with ear)

I pronounce adhesive as a-dee-siv

Emphasis on the first syllable in Theatre.
Addheesiv, emphasis on the second syllable.

Thea tur and I sound the h in adhesive. I have a Scottish accent though.

baubling · 06/12/2020 00:10

Can't help wondering why the correct pronunciation of these two words would be required at the same time.

HunkyPunk · 06/12/2020 00:23

Theer ter and ad ee siv

My Dad was Scottish. I really miss the way he used to say words like thee ate er and poll iss. Smile

Nothing to do with this really, but was talking to an American once and he said “ooh, I guess you are going to the CINEMA to see a FILM” and I just agreed, in a puzzled way. It only occurred to me later that he was taking the piss, as he would say going to the theatre to see a movie. And he would say the A!
