Good Slippers? Mahabis?

Please help me find my ideal slipper!

I’m so fed up with buying new ones because they either aren’t comfortable or they wear out in a month or so.

I’m looking for warmth, a decent sole, preferably not a mule and most importantly comfort.

I keep looking at mahabis but then discounting them as I just can’t bring myself to spend almost £100 on slippers. Anyone have them and think they are worth the expense?

I bought DP a pair last Christmas, and coincidentally my SIL gave me a pair she found in a charity shop, which were clearly new; I love them but I don't think they will last for years.

Cerealnamechangerstrikesagain · 04/12/2020 22:39

I wear mine all day everyday. They are warm and very comfy with a great sole for wearing outside. But they only last a year of heavy use before showing signs of wear then about another 6mo of looking a bit scruffy but useable. I liked them enough to replace them and the ones I got last Xmas are starting to show wear again. I also got them discounted at around £60 (rrp was £80 I think) so nowhere near £100.

Ok - this is a VERY retro website but I bought some slippers from this sheepskin shop in cheddar gorge, and they were wonderful. Four years later they were all worn and battered so I got them again from the website, and they’ve lasted me another four. They don’t look at all glamorous but they are so warm and soft, and with a good hard sole in case I need to nip outside to get something from the car etc.

Giesswein have some lovely ones Wink

Dh wears slippers from Draper of Glastonbury. They are expensive, but fantastic quality. He likes the soft-soled mocassins (Maine?) because he considers slippers to be indoor shoes, yet wears them indoors and out, for hours every day. Each pair lasts about 4y of very heavy wear.

NiceTwin · 04/12/2020 22:51

Gumbo are nice.

SparklingLime · 04/12/2020 22:57

The Moorcraft and some of the Drapers ones are just what I’ve been looking for. Just have to decide now.
Thanks!

DianaT1969 · 04/12/2020 23:04

Those slippers can be manufactured for less than £40 a pair. So why are they £100 RRP?
I wouldn't give them my money. P*ss takers.

Crapbags · 05/12/2020 18:46

Thanks all. Love the retro moorcraft website @Talipesmum they look really good and not a bad price. Will definitely check out drapers and giesswein too. I was wondering the same @DianaT1969 seems way overpriced to me🤷🏼‍♀️

If you fancy Mahabis take a look in TK Maxx. They often have them in at a much lower price.

I received a pair for Xmas last year and I really like them. They look like new a year on, they are comfy and supportive and they have a very solid sole. On a previous thread however some people were not thrilled with them for the full price.

MrDarcysMa · 05/12/2020 18:54

I've just ordered some more mahabis after my 2013 ones started to fall apart. they've also improved the design since then, so if I got 7 years out of the crappy ones then I think you'll be safe!

GeidiPrimes · 05/12/2020 18:55

I got some mahabis about 3 years ago and I really do love them. I only really use them to put the bins out or go in the yard, preferring to stick my feet under a blanket, so I might want a bit more cozyness from my slippers were I a more dedicated wearer of slippers.

GeidiPrimes · 05/12/2020 18:56

*posted too soon - they still look brand new - I usually trash slippers within the year.

MrDarcysMa · 05/12/2020 18:57

Also yes they are expensive but you could say the same about literally every luxury clothing item that's ever for sale.
If they last 7 years plus being worn half of every day that's not bad value. My mum buys 2 pairs a year from supermarkets and has spent more than me over the years!

Talipesmum · 05/12/2020 19:01

The moorcraft people were really nice - last time I needed to replace them I couldn’t remember if I’d needed a size 7 or size 8, so called them up and they measured the bases exactly to help me figure out which ones to get :-)

BiarritzCrackers · 05/12/2020 19:07

I have been through three pairs of Mahabis, each pair lasting about a year and a half before my big toe busts through. I do like them, but am going to try something else next. I wear them all the time I'm at home though, and my work means I move around and stand a lot, so they get a lot of movement, which makes them wear out quicker.

When the first came out, they were a lot cheaper, then suddenly the price boomed by about 50%. I wouldn't pay £79 for them, but discount codes come along now and again.

ilovebruuuceandbags · 05/12/2020 19:22

Just Sheepskin are the best I've ever had, last a few years with daily wear. Bought husband Mahabis one yea as he fancied trying them but they got sent back, not worth the money. Just Sheepskin 100% worth the money.

niceupthedance · 05/12/2020 19:26

Toast wool slippers are the best

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 05/12/2020 20:01

I usually get sheepskin slippers but deviated into Mahabis this year. They are insanely comfortable and I wore them for about 18 hours a
day during the first lockdown. They became pretty
smelly, and I don’t normally have a problem with smelly shoes or slippers. Even putting the insoles
in the washing machine didn’t shift it. The other thing was that the wool uppers bobbled pretty quickly.

I’ve gone back to sheepskin - my latest pair are from Celtic & Co. and they’re so cosy, with a nice,
tough sole for putting the bins out etc.
