Can I add links to a silver chain, if I don't have the links?

Bought my son a solid silver necklace for Christmas but it isn't long enough, I can't afford a longer one (unless it's weirdly thin, bugger me the price of silver has risen over the years!) so I was wondering how possible it would be to add some links if I don't actually have a link?

It's really middle class round where I live and the jewellers very much cater to this and will be very over priced. They eyeball you before you before they even buzz you into the shop (or is that normal?). I digress.

Any ideas about how I can make a chain longer?

It's a second hand chain, if that makes any difference at all.

If it’s a relatively standard type of chain link/size, most jewellers should be able to do this for you.
Perhaps try an independent jewellery in a different area?

You can buy chain extenders online. They have the same fastening as a normal chain so you can hook it on. They cost pennies on Amazonz
