Top shop gift cards, is this really badly communicated?

BBC News - Topshop owner Arcadia limits gift cards to 50% of purchase
www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-55171163

The company told shoppers: "Gift cards have been temporarily switched off until further notice. I can confirm you are still able to use gift cards in store, you will only be able to apply 50% of the gift card to your purchase.

That isn't the case!

I just saw this on the news! What is the case?

StealthPolarBear · 03/12/2020 13:54

When I read it I took it to mean the value of gift cards would be halved, so if you had a gift card for £20, you could redeem it for £10 worth of stuff, as that quite suggests.
What is actually happening I think is you have to match the value of a gift card for any purchase, so if you have a gift card for £20, you must spend at least £40. But you will get the full £20 off.

What do you mean it isn't the case?

GreyishDays · 03/12/2020 13:58

I take it to mean if you have a £20 gift card, you will need to add £20 of your own money and then can buy a £40 product.

What is the case?

Seems fairly clear to me - you can't use your gift card for more than 50% of any purchase.

Is that not what they mean?

That's what the headline and the company statement say.

Must just be me! It was the words "50% of the gift card" that I thought were unclear.
50% of a £20 gift card is £10.

In fact surely that's what
I can confirm you are still able to use gift cards in store, you will only be able to apply 50% of the gift card to your purchase
Means?
