Films to watch with an 8 yr old (just done Harry Potter)?

We’re coming to the end of the Harry Potter series, probably the first time we’ve watched movies we’ve all liked together.

What can we watch next? I can’t sit through the Pixar/Disney animated stuff...but not sure what will hold dds interest.
She loved HP but probably because she’d read the books so already knew the story.

We’re thinking maybe the original Star Wars (Luke is basically Harry P) but if that fails not sure what else?

Ooh Narnia might be worth a try.
Dp and I like the old 80s movies like Gremlins and Labyrinth but wonder if dd will think they’re too dated.

Prior to HP i would have thought some of these were too scary but dd didn’t seem phased by HP.

Percy Jackson?

majesticallyawkward · 03/12/2020 11:44

Narina and Percy Jackson went down well with my DD who also loves happy potter.
She's big on musicals too, mama Mia, greatest showman and the like.

The Roald Dahl adaptations are good- Matilda, BFG, the witches (the recent version is truly terrifying)

dameofdilemma · 03/12/2020 11:53

Are the Percy Jackson movies and good? Dd likes the books but not sure I want to have to sit through the movies if they’re not great...

Matilda is a good bet I think, will give it a go.

Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle, both Studio Ghibli.

Ninbuscl · 03/12/2020 12:31

Studio ghibli movies are good. We enjoyed a few jack black movies recently - school of rock, gullibers travels and goosebumps (although goosebumps is a little scary) also my kids love all the home alone movies

Titsywoo · 03/12/2020 12:31

My kids enjoyed the older stuff like Back to the Future, Harry and the Hendersons, Honey I Shrunk the Kids etc

The Kid who would be King is very good.

Back to the Future, obviously.

His Dark Materials?

WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 03/12/2020 12:40

All the Star Wars
All the Marvel movies

Lostinacloud · 03/12/2020 12:43

My 8 year old really liked The Truman show which i was a bit surprised by but I think it’s a great film too so was nice to watch it with him. He also loves the new Jumanji movies that feature The Rock.

dameofdilemma · 03/12/2020 12:53

Home Alone should be a hit. Anything with lots of action and not too many long talking scenes.
Also dd is a bit meh about romantic scenes so need to try to remember which 80s moving have too much snogging.

The Witches old and new are good Smile

JustCallMeGriffin · 03/12/2020 13:42

DD8 loves:
Matilda
Jumanji (all of them)
Lara Croft (all of them)
All the MCU films (Avengers, Spiderman etc)
Goosebumps
School of Rock
Pirates of the Caribbean (all of them, except the last one)
Avatar
The Greatest Showman

She's very much in the image of her father though and just loves films.
